78th Army Band
The 78th Army Band, United States Army Reserve is a musical organization of the 99th Reserve Support Command. It was organized on 1 October 2008 as part of the Army Reserve Transformation process and was posted to Ft. Dix, New Jersey. On 29 June 2018, the 78th Army Band absorbed members of the 319th Army Band after its inactivation leaving an element of Army Music in the ever desirable NYC market. In addition to its concert, ceremonial and concert bands the 78th Army Band also features a jazz combo, brass quintet, a Dixie-land band and a rock band known as "Checkmate". Presently the band's members are from Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, and Virginia. As an Army Reserve band the 78th trains and performs one weekend a month and performs two weeks of active duty each year. The United States Army Reserve (USAR) is a Military reserve force, reserve force of the United States Army. Together, the Army Reserve and the Army National Guard constitute the Army element of the reserve components of the United States Armed Forces. Since July 2020, the Chief of the United States Army Reserve is Lieutenant general (United States), Lieutenant General Jody J. Daniels. 99th Infantry Division (United States)
The 99th Infantry Division was formed in 1942 and deployed overseas in 1944. The "Checkerboard" or "Battle Babies" division landed at the French port of Le Havre and proceeded northeast to Belgium. During the heavy fighting in the Battle of the Bulge, the unit suffered many casualties, yet tenaciously held its defensive position. In March 1945, the 99th advanced into the Rhineland, crossing the Rhine River at Remagen on March 11. After fighting in the Ruhr area, the unit moved southward into Bavaria, where it was located at the end of the war. The 99th Infantry Division, the "Checkerboard" division, gained its nickname from the division's insignia. The insignia was devised upon the 99th's formation in 1942, when the division was headquartered in the city of Pittsburgh. The blue and white checkerboard in the division's insignia is taken from the coat of arms of William Pitt, for whom Pittsburgh is named. Joint Base McGuire–Dix–Lakehurst
Joint Base McGuire–Dix–Lakehurst (JB MDL) is a United States military facility located southeast of Trenton, New Jersey. The base is the only tri-service base in the United States Department of Defense and includes units from all six armed forces branches. The facility is an amalgamation of the United States Air Force's McGuire Air Force Base, the United States Army's Fort Dix and the United States Navy's Naval Air Engineering Station Lakehurst, which were merged on 1 October 2009. It was established in accordance with congressional legislation implementing the recommendations of the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Commission. The legislation ordered the consolidation of the three facilities which were adjoining, but separate military installations, into a single joint base, one of 12 formed in the United States as a result of the law.
