71st Airborne Brigade (United States)
The 71st Airborne Brigade was an airborne forces, airborne brigade of the United States Army and the Texas Army National Guard. The brigade was active from 15 January 1968 until 1 November 1973. The formation traces its history to the 71st Infantry Brigade of the 36th Division in World War I, when it had the 141st and 142nd Infantry Regiments, along with the 132nd Machine Gun Battalion, assigned. Airborne Forces
Airborne forces, airborne troops, or airborne infantry are ground combat units carried by aircraft and airdropped into battle zones, typically by parachute drop or air assault. Parachute-qualified infantry and support personnel serving in airborne units are also known as paratroopers. The main advantage of airborne forces is their ability to be deployed into combat zones without land passage, as long as the airspace is accessible. Formations of airborne forces are limited only by the number and size of their transport aircraft; a sizeable force can appear "out of the sky" behind enemy lines in merely hours if not minutes, an action known as ''vertical envelopment''. Airborne forces typically lack enough supplies for prolonged combat, so they are utilized for establishing an airhead to bring in larger forces before carrying out other combat objectives. The 133rd Field Artillery Regiment is a parent field artillery regiment of the United States Army National Guard. It is currently represented in the Texas Army National Guard by the 1st, 3rd, and 4th Battalions. Battery E, 1st Battalion, 133rd Field Artillery of the 49th Armored Division served in Iraq March 2004 until March 2005. 36th Airborne Brigade (United States)
The 36th Airborne Brigade was an airborne forces, airborne brigade of the United States Army and the Texas Army National Guard. The brigade was active from 1 November 1973 to 1 April 1980. The unit's lineage continues today in the 36th Infantry Division (United States), 36th Infantry Division. A 36th Brigade of infantry was originally part of the National Army 18th Division (United States), 18th Division, formed briefly in 1917–18. 71st Battlefield Surveillance Brigade
The 71st Expeditionary Military Intelligence Brigade (EMIB) is a unit of the Texas Army National Guard. The formation traces its history to elements of the 36th Infantry Division. The 71st was previously a Battlefield Surveillance Brigades (BfSB). The BfSBs were eliminated in 2016 and the 71st was restructured to the EMIB due to doctrinal changes and the inactivation of the 36th Division Artillery (DIVARTY). It is a separate and distinct organization and is not authorized to claim heraldic links to the previous Texas Army National Guard 71st Airborne Brigade.
