708th People's Grenadier Division
The 708th Volksgrenadier Division (708th People's Grenadier Division, german: 708. Volksgrenadierdivision), formerly the 708th Infantry Division () was a German army division active during World War II. It took part in ''Operation Northwind'', where it was subsequently destroyed. Operational history The 708th Infantry Division was formed from men around Strasbourg in Wehrkreis VIII. Reactivation The 708th Division was reactivated in September 1944 as a new ''Volksgrenadier'' division, and placed under the leadership of ''Major'' Hans-Ludwig Kuhlenkampff on the 10th. The division was sent to occupy and defend Czechoslovakia from the Soviet advance. After two months, the division was sent to the western front as part of the LXIV Army Corps, with ''Lieutenant Colonel'' Johannes Marahrens taking over as commanding officer the following January. 708th Infantry Division
The 708th Infantry Division (German: ''708. Infanteriedivision'') was a German Army infantry division in World War II. History The 708th Infantry Division was formed in May 1941 and transferred to France in June to serve as an occupational force in the area around Bordeaux and Royan. A month after the D-day landings in July 1944, the 708th were moved north-west to Normandy to cut off the Allies' supply lines. Failing to halt the allied advance, the Wehrmacht quickly moved out of France in August. The division's commander, ''Generalmajor'' Arndt was killed in Troyes on 24 August during the evacuation. The 708th was destroyed near Le Mans in the evacuation. Operation Northwind
Operation Northwind (german: Unternehmen Nordwind) was the last major German offensive of World War II on the Western Front. Northwind was launched to support the German Ardennes offensive campaign in the Battle of the Bulge, which by December of 1944 had decisively turned against the German forces. It began on 31 December 1944 in Rhineland-Palatinate, Alsace and Lorraine in southwestern Germany and northeastern France, and ended on 25 January 1945. The Colmar Pocket (french: Poche de Colmar; de , Brückenkopf Elsass) was the area held in central Alsace, France, by the German Nineteenth Army from November 1944 to February 1945, against the U.S. 6th Army Group (6th AG) during World War II. It was formed when 6th AG liberated southern and northern Alsace and adjacent eastern Lorraine, but could not clear central Alsace. During Operation Nordwind in December 1944, the 19th Army attacked north out of the Pocket in support of other German forces attacking south from the Saar into northern Alsace. ''Volksgrenadier'' was the name given to a type of German Army division formed in the Autumn of 1944 after the double loss of Army Group Center to the Soviets in Operation Bagration and the Fifth Panzer Army to the Allies in Normandy.
