6102 Visby, provisional designation ', is a stony background asteroid from the central region of the asteroid belt, approximately in diameter. The asteroid was discovered on 21 March 1993, during the Uppsala-ESO Survey of Asteroids and Comets (UESAC) at the ESO's La Silla Observatory site in northern Chile. It is UESAC's lowest numbered discoveries (among more than 1,100 asteroids). It was named for the Swedish town of Visby. Orbit and classification ''Visby'' is a non-family asteroid from the main belt's background population. It orbits the Sun in the central main-belt at a distance of 2.2–3.0  AU once every 4 years and 2 months (1,530 days). Its orbit has an eccentricity of 0.16 and an inclination of 2 ° with respect to the ecliptic. A first precovery was taken at Palomar Observatory in 1989, extending the body's observation arc by 4 years prior to its official discovery observation at La Silla. Uppsala-ESO Survey Of Asteroids And Comets
The Uppsala–ESO Survey of Asteroids and Comets (UESAC) took place in 1992–1993. A large number of asteroids were investigated. Over 15,000 positions were detected, and orbits were calculated for 2500. The observations were taken at ESO's La Silla Observatory site in Chile, with a total of 74 obtained photographic plates, and at the Anglo-Australian Observatory (Siding Spring Observatory) in Australia. Details were published in 1996. List of discovered minor planets The Minor Planet Center credits UESAC with the discovery of 1123 numbered minor planets. The discoveries range from the lowest numbered discovery, 6102 Visby, to the currently highest numbered body, . Palomar Transient Factory
The Palomar Transient Factory (PTF, obs. code: I41), was an astronomical survey using a wide-field survey camera designed to search for optical transient and variable sources such as variable stars, supernovae, asteroids and comets. The project completed commissioning in summer 2009, and continued until December 2012. It has since been succeeded by the Intermediate Palomar Transient Factory (iPTF), which itself transitioned to the Zwicky Transient Facility in 2017/18. List Of Gotland-related Asteroids
Several asteroids or minor planets in the asteroid belt with Gotland-related names have been discovered and named by Swedish astronomer Claes-Ingvar Lagerkvist. Others have been named during courses of the Uppsala-ESO Survey of Asteroids and Comets at the European Southern Observatory and have not been credited to a single discoverer, but rather collective work. , 175,658 asteroids have been numbered and almost 14,300 of those have been named. 205 have been named after places, persons or fictional figures in Sweden. A portion of these are from the island of Gotland. Gotland is fairly well represented because Lagerkvist has been a summer resident on the island since 1983.
