6mm Optimum
The "6mm Optimum" is a concept popularized in 1999 by military writer Stanley C. Crist. History Crist argued for the adoption of a 6mm service rifle chambering as a replacement for the venerable 5.56×45mm NATO and 7.62×51mm NATO, calculating that such a loading would be near the weight and minimal recoil of the lightweight 5.56 (.223 caliber) while nearer the terminal performance of the heavier 7.62, thereby permitting a single cartridge to serve in general-purpose machine guns, sniper rifles, and infantry carbines. 6mm AR
The 6mm AR is a centerfire wildcat cartridge initially designed by Robert Whitley for long-range performance in an AR-15 rifle. Description The cartridge uses a 6.5 Grendel case that has been necked-down to accept a 6.2 mm (.243 in) bullet. The 6mm AR takes advantage of the wide variety of 6.2 mm (.243 in) caliber bullets. Slim, long bullets with high ballistic coefficient are ideal for energy retention at long ranges. A ballistic table or ballistic chart is a tool which predicts the trajectory of a projectile, and is used to compensate for physical effects in order to increase the probability of the projectile reaching the intended target. Ballistic tables are used in hunting, sport shooting, military and scientific applications. Corrections in ballistic tables are given relative to a zero range. Ballistic charts are often given in angular measurements, with units in either milliradians (mil) or minutes of arc (moa). 6×45mm SAW
The 6×45mm SAW describes an experimental series of rimless bottlenecked intermediate cartridges developed in the 1970s for the U.S. Army. The cartridges were produced in a variety of sizes and from a variety of materials. The intent was to develop a cartridge that would replace all 5.56×45mm NATO weapons as well as most 7.62×51mm NATO rifles and machine guns in the U.S. military. Eventually, the 5.56mm was retained and only the machine gun portion of the SAW (Squad Automatic Weapon) competition was successful. That program led to the M249 light machine gun. 6mm XC (also known as 6XC) is a rifle cartridge, similar to the 6x47mm Swiss Match. History The 6mm XC was initially developed specifically for NRA High Power match shooting by 11-time NRA High Power National Champion David Tubb. It is touted as being one of the most accurate long-range 6 mm rounds in the world that is designed for repeating rifles. The 6XC is a CIP standardized case. Factory brass is available from Norma and Peterson. The 6mm Advanced Rifle Cartridge (6×38mm), or 6mm ARC for short, is a 6 mm (.243) caliber intermediate rifle cartridge introduced by Hornady in 2020, as a low-recoil, high-accuracy long-range cartridge, designed for use in the AR-15 platform at request of a specialized group within the U.S. DoD for its multipurpose combat rifle program. Performance The cartridge makes use of 6 mm (.243 in) bullets, which are known for their high ballistic coefficients due to the high sectional density with less drag and better energy retention at extended ranges. The 6mm PPC (Palmisano & Pindel Cartridge), or 6 PPC as it is more often called, is a centerfire rifle cartridge used almost exclusively for benchrest shooting. It is one of the most accurate cartridges available at distances of up to 300 meters. This cartridge's accuracy is produced by a combination of its stout posture, being only long, and aggressive shoulder angle of 30 degrees.
