65th Air Army
The 65th Air Army DA was an air army of the Soviet Air Forces. The army was formed in November 1942 from the Air Force of the Karelian Front as the 7th Air Army and provided air support for the front until the end of World War II. Postwar, it was transferred to Khabarovsk and became the 3rd Air Army DA (Long-range aviation), controlling Soviet strategic bomber forces for the rest of its existence. In 1949 it was renumbered the 65th Air Army DA. The army was disbanded in mid-1953. Vasily Ivanovich Zhdanov (russian: Василий Иванович Жданов; born 12 January 1963) is a retired Soviet road cyclist. He was part of the Soviet team that won the 100 km team time trial at the 1985 World Championships. He competed in the same event at the 1988 Summer Olympics and finished in seventh place. The same year he won the Milk Race. Zhdanov was born in Russia, but in 1987 graduated from the University of Physical Education in Kiyv (Kharkiv branch), Ukraine, and since the 1980s took various sport and business related positions in Kharkiv and Kiyv. Between 1994 and 1996 he was the head coach of the Ukrainian road racing team, then until 2005 he was a personal assistant of Oleg Blokhin in Ukraine's parliament matters. Vozdvizhenka (air Base)
Vozdvizhenka (also known as Ussuriysk and before the 1960s Voroshilov) is an air base in Primorsky Krai located close to the village of Vozdvizhenka. This base was dedicated to Pacific heavy long-range bomber fleet, housing the 444th Berlin Order of Kutuzov 3rd degree and Alexander Nevsky Heavy Bomber Aviation Regiment, part of the 326th Heavy Bomber Aviation Division, 37th Air Army. A declassified CIA document from 1969 showed this was the only base east of the Urals that had the Tupolev Tu-22 Blinder aircraft. Later in the 1970s onward the regiment consisted of supersonic long-range Tu-22M3 bombers. The 444th Regiment was disbanded in 2009, with some aircraft transferred to the Belaya air base, and others dismantled (removed engines, equipment, and with holes cut in the fuselage). Smirnykh Air Base
Smirnykh (russian: Смирных) is an abandoned Russian Air Force airbase in Sakhalin, Russia located 2 km east of the village of the same name. It appeared in June 1966 KH-7 imagery with a runway length of 2,000 m. It was expanded sometime after this to 2,500 m with a new extension of revetments added. History The base was originally built near the town of Smirnykh, a coaling and watering station for the Sakhalin railway. The airfield was built by the Imperial Japanese Army in the early 20th century and was called Keton. After the Second World War, Southern Sakhalin was handed over to the Soviet Union, and the airbase was then expanded. The airfield was first detected by Western intelligence around 1962.
