51 East Main Street, also known as the William R. Stockbridge House, is a historic home in Yarmouth, Maine. Stockbridge is believed to be the original 1848 owner of 35 East Main Street, just a few yards down the hill. After Stockbridge's death in 1850, the home changed hands several times. Yarmouth is a town in Cumberland County, Maine, United States, twelve miles north of the state's largest city, Portland. When originally settled in 1636, as North Yarmouth, it was part of Massachusetts, and remained as such for 213 years. Interstate 295 (I-295) is a auxiliary Interstate Highway in the US state of Maine from I-95 in Scarborough to I-95 in West Gardiner. The highway was designated the Richard A. Coleman Highway in 2015 by the Maine Legislature. The highway serves as a bypass of Lewiston–Auburn and serves the Portland metropolitan area. King's Highway (Charleston To Boston)
The King's Highway was a roughly road laid out from 1650 to 1735 in the American colonies. It was built on the order of Charles II of England, who directed his colonial governors to link Charleston, South Carolina, and Boston, Massachusetts. The section north of New York City, laid out on January 22, 1673, became the Upper Boston Post Road. The road was finally completed in 1735. Much of the Post Road is now U.S. Route 1 and U.S. Route 20. Pleasant Street is a historic street in Yarmouth, Maine, United States. It was formerly part of the Atlantic Highway (or New England Route 1), a precursor to U.S. Route 1. It connects to Lafayette Street, part of today's Maine State Route 88, at Pleasant Street’s southern and northern ends. It has existed since at least 1761, which is when a milestone was placed on the street, on the order of Benjamin Franklin, due to its being on the King's Highway, to denote its distance from Boston, Massachusetts. As part of his duties, Franklin conducted inspections of the roads that were used for delivering mail. One method of charging for mail service was by mileage, so Franklin invented an odometer to measure mileage more accurately. The King's Highway, as a result, morphed into the Post Road. ''Old Times in North Yarmouth, Maine'' was a quarterly publication first printed in magazine form between 1877 and 1884 by Augustus W. Corliss. It covered the history and genealogy of the town of North Yarmouth, Maine. In 1977, a century after its first edition was printed, it was published in book form by the New Hampshire Publishing Company. Subtitled ''A Magazine Devoted to the Preservation and Publication of Documents Relating to the Early History of North Yarmouth, Maine'', it was printed across several volumes during Corliss' military career, which spanned forty years. Corliss published the first issue in January 1877, and overall 32 issues were published through October 1884 – an average of 4.5 issues per year.
