5th Military District (Australia)
The 5th Military District was an administrative district of the Australian Army. Formed shortly after the Federation of Australia, the 5th Military District covered all of Western Australia except the Kimberley region, with its headquarters at Swan Barracks in Perth. Following the First World War, the area's designation was changed to the 5th District Base. In October 1939, it was re-designated as Western Command when the Army moved towards a geographic command structure. In April 1942, the Army was reorganised and Western Command became III Corps in April 1942. Western Command was re-formed in June 1944 when the need for a corps-level headquarters passed. Then-Captain William Henderson, later promoted to Major General, served on the command's staff soon after the Second World War ended. The Australian Army is the principal Army, land warfare force of Australia, a part of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) along with the Royal Australian Navy and the Royal Australian Air Force. Federation Of Australia
The Federation of Australia was the process by which the six separate British self-governing colonies of Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia (which also governed what is now the Northern Territory), and Western Australia agreed to unite and form the Commonwealth of Australia, establishing a system of federalism in Australia. Kimberley (Western Australia)
The Kimberley is the northernmost of the nine regions of Western Australia. It is bordered on the west by the Indian Ocean, on the north by the Timor Sea, on the south by the Great Sandy Desert, Great Sandy and Tanami Desert, Tanami deserts in the region of the Pilbara, and on the east by the Northern Territory. Swan Barracks
Swan Barracks was a military establishment in Francis Street, Perth, Western Australia. The heritage listed building is located between Museum and Beaufort Streets. Military use The barracks began as an unnamed drill hall constructed in 1896 prior to the Federation of Australia. An administration building was later constructed in a style described by the heritage register as "a romantic interpretation of a fortress". Upon federation the barracks was used by the Australian Army, and became the headquarters of its 5th Military District. An ordnance store was added to the complex in 1905. The barracks was named in 1928. Swan Barracks was a military headquarters during the Second World War. III Corps (Australia)
III Corps was an Australian Army unit during World War II. It was responsible for the defence of Western Australia in 1942–1944. The corps was formed in April 1942 from Western Command, which had been established in October 1939. Throughout the war, the formation's size expanded and contracted as available manpower, and the strategic situation, dictated. At its height, the corps consisted of two infantry divisions and one armoured division, which were deployed to defend against a Japanese invasion threat, which ultimately never eventuated. William Henderson (general)
Major General William George Henderson, (19 July 1919 – 10 October 1995) was a senior officer in the Australian Army. Biography Born in Clifton Hill, Victoria, on 19 July 1919, Henderson graduated from the Royal Military College, Duntroon in June 1941. An infantryman, he served in the Second World War, Korean War, Malayan Emergency and Vietnam War. He attended Staff College at Cabarlah in 1945 before holding appointments at Western Command in Perth and as Brigade Major (effectively Chief of Staff) of 13th Infantry Brigade, also in Western Australia. Henderson commanded the 2nd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (2 RAR) from November 1957 to November 1958. 13th Infantry Brigade (Australia)
The 13th Brigade is an Army Reserve formation of the Australian Army. Originally formed in 1912 as a Militia formation in Victoria, the brigade was re-raised as a First Australian Imperial Force unit during World War I and fought on the Western Front. In the interwar years, the brigade was re-raised as a part-time formation based in Western Australia and later fought in the New Britain Campaign during World War II. It is currently headquartered at Perth in Western Australia and has units located across the state in locations such as Geraldton, Kalgoorlie, Albany, Katanning, Joondalup and Rockingham. Pentropic Organisation
The Pentropic organisation was a military organisation used by the Australian Army between 1960 and 1965. It was based on the United States Army's pentomic organisation and involved reorganising most of the Army's combat units into units based on five elements, rather than the previous three or four sub-elements. The organisation proved unsuccessful, and the Army reverted to its previous unit structures in early 1965. History The decision to adopt the Pentropic organisation was driven by a desire to modernise the Army and ensure that Australian units were able to integrate with those of the United States Army. While the US Pentomic organisation had been implemented in 1957 to improve the Army's ability to operate during a nuclear war, the Australian organisation was optimised for limited wars in South East Asia in which there was a chance that nuclear weapons might be used.
