5th Infantry Division (Russian Empire)
The 5th Infantry Division (russian: 5-я пехотная дивизия, ''5-ya Pekhotnaya Diviziya'') was an infantry formation of the Russian Imperial Army that existed in various formations from 1806 until the end of World War I and the Russian Revolution. When the war broke out in 1914 it was based in Zhytomyr and was part of the 9th Army Corps. The Imperial Russian Army (russian: Ру́сская импера́торская а́рмия, tr. ) was the armed land force of the Russian Empire, active from around 1721 to the Russian Revolution of 1917. Alexander Frantsevich Ragoza (russian: Алекса́ндр Фра́нцевич Рагоза́, uk, Олександр Францевич Рогоза; 20 June .S. 8 June1858 – 29 June 1919), in Ukrainian Oleksandr Frantsevych Rohoza, was a Minister of Defense of the Ukrainian State. Vladimir Vasilyevich Smirnov (4 July 1849 – 1 November 1918) was an Imperial Russian Army general of the infantry who was a division, corps and field army commander. He fought in the Russian-Turkish War of 1877–1878 and in World War I. Biography Born on 4 July 1849, Smirnov began his education in the Polotsk Cadet Corps, then transferred to the Pavlovsk Military School on 23 August 1865. On 17 June 1867 he graduated as a second lieutenant and was assigned to the 28th Polotsk Infantry Regiment. Mikhail Fyodorovich Mirkovich (September 17, 1836 – March 24, 1891) was an Imperial Russian regimental commander and ethnographer. Dmitry Savelyevich Shuvayev (; – 19 December 1937) was a Russian military leader, Infantry General (1912) and Minister of War (1916). Life Dmitry Shuvayev graduated from Alexander Military School in 1872. Between 1873 and 1875, he participated in campaigns in Central Asia. He left General Staff Academy in 1878. In 1879, he became a professor at the military school in Kiev. He used to command a division (1905) and a corps (1907-1908). In 1909, Shuvayev was appointed head of Chief Quartermaster Department and chief quartermaster. He then held a post of Chief Field Quartermaster between December 1915 and March 1916.
