5th Empire Awards
The 5th Empire Awards ceremony, presented by the British film magazine ''Empire'', honored the best films of 1999 and took place on 17 February 2000 at the Park Lane Hotel in London, England. During the ceremony, ''Empire'' presented Empire Awards in nine categories as well as five honorary awards. The honorary Contribution to Cinema award was introduced and presented for the only time this year. The honorary Movie Masterpiece Award was presented for the last time, having been presented for the first and only other time at the 4th Empire Awards in 1999. The awards were sponsored by Stella Artois for the third consecutive year. ''Notting Hill'' won the most awards with three including Best British Film and Best British Director for Roger Michell. Park Lane Hotel
The Sheraton Grand London Park Lane is a 5 Star hotel on Piccadilly, London. The hotel opened in 1927 as The Park Lane Hotel to designs by architects Adie, Button and Partners, in a grand Art Deco style, and was constructed by the developer Sir Bracewell Smith. The original architect had been C. W. Stephens, who designed Harrods, but work had stopped at the outbreak of the First World War, and Stephens died in 1917. The building is a fine example with a mansard roof and Portland stone facade. The building is Grade II listed and has 303 bedrooms on eight floors with the front overlooking Green Park towards Buckingham Palace. The hotel was bought by ITT Sheraton in April 1996 for $70 million. ITT Sheraton was acquired by Starwood in 1998. The Empire Award for Best British Director was an Empire Award presented annually by the British film magazine ''Empire'' to honor a British director working within the film industry. The Empire Award for Best British Director was first introduced at the 2nd Empire Awards ceremony in 1997 with Danny Boyle receiving the award for his direction of ''Trainspotting'' and last presented as an annual award at the 6th Empire Awards ceremony in 2001 with it returning for a final time at the 10th Empire Awards ceremony in 2005. It was one of three Best British awards retired that year (the others being Best British Actor and Best British Actress). Winners were voted by the readers of ''Empire'' magazine. ''Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me'' is a 1999 American spy comedy film directed by Jay Roach. ''JFK'' (released under the subtitle The Story That Won’t Go Away) is a 1991 American epic political thriller film written and directed by Oliver Stone. The film examines the events leading up to the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963 and its alleged cover-up, through the eyes of former New Orleans district attorney Jim Garrison. Garrison filed charges against Clay Shaw for his alleged participation in a conspiracy to assassinate Kennedy, for which Lee Harvey Oswald was found responsible by the Warren Commission.
