55th Arizona State Legislature
The 55th Arizona State Legislature, consisting of the Arizona Senate and the Arizona House of Representatives, is the current legislative session constituted in Phoenix on January 11, 2021, during the second two years of Doug Ducey's second full term in office. Both the Senate and the House membership remained constant at 30 and 60, respectively. In the November 2020 Senate election, Democrats gained one seat, leaving the Republicans with a 16–14 majority. Republicans maintained an unchanged 31–29 majority in the House after the November 2020 House election. Sessions The Legislature met in its first regular session at the State Capitol in Phoenix. The session opened on January 11, 2021, and adjourned ''sine die'' on June 30, 2021. The second regular session began on January 10, 2022, adjourning on June 25, 2022. Karen Fann
Karen Fann (born September 1, 1954) is a Republican member of the Arizona Senate, representing Arizona Legislative District 1. Fann became President of the Arizona Senate in 2019. After Joe Biden won the 2020 presidential election and Donald Trump and other Republicans made false claims of electoral fraud, Fann ordered an audit of the election results in Maricopa County. The audit was widely seen as an illegitimate "effort to undermine valid election results". Fann announced in November 2021 that she would not run for re-election when her current term ends in January 2023. Career Fann is the second female Senate President in the history of Arizona. Kirsten Engel is an American lawyer and politician who has served as a member of the Arizona House of Representatives and the Arizona Senate. Engel was the Democratic nominee in 2022 for Arizona's 6th congressional district, losing narrowly to Republican Juan Ciscomani. Early life and education Engel was born and raised in Chicago. Lela Alston
Lela Alston (born June 26, 1942) is an American politician and a Democratic member of the Arizona State Senate representing District 24 since January 14, 2019. She previously served in the Arizona House of Representatives from 2013 to 2019, and from 2011 to 2013 in the District 11 seat, and non-consecutively in the Arizona State Legislature from 1977 until 1995 in the Arizona Senate. Michelle Ugenti
Michelle Ugenti-Rita (born June 28, 1980) is an American politician and a former Republican member of the Arizona State Senate representing District 23 from 2019 to 2023. She previously served in the Arizona House of Representatives from 2013 to 2019. Ugenti served consecutively from January 10, 2011 until January 14, 2013 in the District 8 seat. David Livingston is an American politician and a Republican member of the Arizona House of Representatives representing District 28. He previously served in the Arizona Senate representing District 22 from 2019 to 2023. He also served in the Arizona House of Representatives from 2013 to 2019. Rick Gray (born in Omaha, Nebraska) is an American politician and former member of the Arizona Senate as well as a former Republican member of the Arizona House of Representatives representing District 21.
