54th New York Volunteer Infantry
The 54th New York Infantry Regiment (aka "Schwarze Yaeger" or "Hiram Barney Rifles") was an infantry regiment in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Service The 54th New York Infantry was organized in Hudson, New York beginning August 30, 1861 and mustered in September 5, 1861 through October 16, 1861 under the command of Colonel Eugene A. Colonel (United States)
The colonel () in the United States Army, Marine Corps, Air Force and Space Force, is the most senior field-grade military officer rank, immediately above the rank of lieutenant colonel and just below the rank of brigadier general. Colonel is equivalent to the naval rank of captain in the other uniformed services. X Corps was a corps of the Union Army during the American Civil War. It served during operations in South Carolina in the Department of the South, and later in Benjamin Butler (politician), Benjamin Butler's Army of the James, during the Bermuda Hundred Campaign, Bermuda Hundred and Petersburg Campaign, Petersburg Campaigns. The XI Corps (Eleventh Army Corps) was a corps of the Union Army during the American Civil War, best remembered for its involvement in the battles of Chancellorsville and Gettysburg in 1863. Formation and the Valley Campaign The XI Corps was an amalgamation of two separate commands. These were John Fremont's Army of the Mountain Department and Louis Blenker's division of German immigrants. Blenker had led a German brigade at First Bull Run, although it was held in reserve and saw no major fighting, and afterwards became a division commander in the new Army of the Potomac. Intended to go to the Virginia Peninsula in the spring of 1862, Blenker's troops were instead detached and sent out west to join Fremont.
