515th Air Defense Group
The 515th Air Defense Group is a disbanded United States Air Force (USAF) organization. Its last assignment was with the 31st Air Division, stationed at Duluth Municipal Airport, Minnesota, where it was inactivated in 1955. The group was originally activated as a support unit for a combat group at the end of World War II in Italy, and then redeployed to Okinawa, where it continued that mission until it was inactivated in 1945. The group was activated once again in 1953, when Air Defense Command (ADC) established it as the headquarters for a dispersed fighter-interceptor squadron and the medical, maintenance, and administrative squadrons supporting it. It was replaced in 1955 when ADC transferred its mission, equipment, and personnel to the 343d Fighter Group in a project that replaced air defense groups commanding fighter squadrons with fighter groups with distinguished records during World War II. The 515th Air Mobility Operations Wing is part of Air Mobility Command stationed at Joint Base Pearl Harbor–Hickam, Hawaii. It was activated in 2008. It coordinates logistical air movements into, out of, and throughout the Pacific. It is part of the United States Air Force Expeditionary Center. Mission The 515th serves as the Pacific arm of the United States Air Force Expeditionary Center and Air Mobility Command (AMC). The wing's mission is to provide enroute capability to accelerate air mobility for war fighters throughout the Pacific, utilizing command and control, aerial port operations and aircraft maintenance. The 515th controls, loads, unloads, and repairs mobility aircraft en route through the Pacific area. This includes military, commercial, and foreign aircraft. 515th Bombardment Squadron
The 515th Bombardment Squadron is an inactive United States Air Force unit. It was first formed in the Middle East in 1942 to reinforce the Royal Air Force in North Africa with personnel and aircraft diverted from delivery to the China Burma India Theater. The squadron moved forward, eventually being stationed in Italy, where it participated in the strategic bombing campaign against Germany, and was awarded three Distinguished Unit Citations for its combat actions. Following V-E Day, the squadron returned to the United States, where it converted to Boeing B-29 Superfortress bombers, but was inactivated in March 1946. Its last assignment was with the 407th Strategic Fighter Wing stationed at Great Falls Air Force Base, Montana, where it was inactivated on 1 July 1957.
