50 Squadron SAAF
50 Squadron SAAF was a South African Air Force squadron during World War II. History 50 Squadron was formed on 1 December 1939 by amalgamating the SAAF's 17, 18 and 19 Squadrons. During the East African Campaign 50 Squadron operated a 'shuttle service' between the warzone in East Africa and South Africa as part of 1 Bomber Transport Brigade. The brigade was re-designated 5 Wing in February 1941, and continued to fly 'shuttle service' flights between the Mediterranean and South Africa until after the war. The squadron operated Junkers F.13FE, Ju-86Z/K-1 and Ju 52/3M aircraft which had been requisitioned from the South African Airways at the outbreak of war. The eleven Ju 52's were assigned to 51 Flight, operating a shuttle service from Nairobi to Egypt, Middle East and South Africa. The 50th Attack Squadron is a squadron of the United States Air Force, stationed at Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina, where it operates the General Atomics MQ-9 Reaper unmanned aerial vehicle. It is assigned to the 25th Attack Group, also at Shaw AFB, and a component of the 432d Wing, located at Creech Air Force Base, Nevada. Formed in August 1917, as the 50th Aero Squadron, the unit flew observation missions in the American built de Havilland DH-4 over the battlefields of World War I. On 6 October 1918, 1Lt Harold E. Goettler and 2Lt Erwin R. The 50th Fighter-Bomber Squadron is an inactive United States Air Force unit. It was last assigned to the 319th Fighter-Bomber Group at New Orleans Naval Air Station, Louisiana, where it was inactivated on 16 November 1957. The squadron was first activated in 1941 as the 50th Bombardment Squadron. Following the entry of the United States into World War II , the squadron engaged in antisubmarine warfare patrols, but then became a training unit until spring 1944, when it was disbanded in a general reorganization of Army Air Forces training units in the United States. The squadron was reconstituted and activated in the reserve in 1947. It was mobilized in 1951 for the Korean War, but its personnel were used as fillers for other units and the squadron was inactivated. The 50th Flying Training Squadron is part of the 14th Flying Training Wing based at Columbus Air Force Base, Mississippi. It operates Northrop T-38C Talon aircraft conducting flight training. The 50th Military Airlift Squadron is an inactive United States Air Force unit. Its last assignment was to the 1502d Air Transport Wing, Military Air Transport Service, stationed at Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii. It was inactivated on 8 January 1966. History Replaced the 1266th Air Transport Squadron, which had been established in 1949 as a medium transport squadron flying C-54 Skymasters, it transported supplies and personnel in the Pacific between Hawaii and the Philippines and bases in-between. It received long distance Boeing C-97 Stratofreighters and intercontinental Douglas C-124 Globemaster IIs in the 1950s and was part of the Military Air Transport Service worldwide network of transport units. The 50th Operations Group was a subordinate unit of the 50th Space Wing, and assigned to Air Force Space Command from 1991-2019. The group, redesignated as Space Delta 8 on 24 Jul 2020 is stationed at Schriever Space Force Base, previously Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado. The group was activated in January 1941 as the 50th Pursuit Group and began training under Third Air Force. In May 1942 it was reassigned to the Army Air Forces School of Applied Tactics, where it was a training and test unit as the 50th Fighter Group (Special). The group moved to the European Theater of Operations in the Spring 1944 expansion of Ninth Air Force in England in preparation for Operation Overlord. It few its first combat mission on 1 May 1944. The squadron provides command and control systems, configuration control, and systems integrations for seven Department of Defense space programs including $8.2 billion Satellite Control Network supporting $50 billion in national satellite and terrestrial systems for United States, allied, and coalition forces. The squadron operates and maintains 22 Defense Information Systems Agency nodes providing secure and unsecure voice and data communications for over 485 worldwide sites as well as over $100 million in base infrastructure supporting over 8,900 personnel.
