Prince Edward Island Liberal Party
The Prince Edward Island Liberal Party (officially the ''Prince Edward Island Liberal Association'') is a political party in the province of Prince Edward Island, Canada. The PEI Liberals are affiliated with the federal Liberal Party of Canada. History The party was created when PEI was a British colony by reformers who agitated for the system of responsible government. This was granted by the British crown to the colony in 1851. George Coles was its dominant figure in its first decades. While initially supportive of Canadian Confederation, Coles and the Liberals soured on the project, and it was not until 1873 that the island joined Canada as a means of relieving the PEI government's severe debts. The early party supported the abolition of school fees, and a resolution to the " Land Question" that divided the province. John George MacKay (November 6, 1893 – October 21, 1974) was a farmer and political figure on Prince Edward Island. He represented 4th Prince in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island from 1949 to 1966 as a Liberal. MacKay was the 20th Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island, serving from October 6, 1969 to October 24, 1974. Biography He was born in Albany, Prince Edward Island, the son of David MacKay and Almira Harvey, and was educated there. MacKay married Muriel Beatrice Boulter in 1918. He was president of the Tryon Dairying Company and the Tryon Farmers' Institute and also served as a director of the Provincial Swine Breeders' Association. Augustin Gallant
Augustin Gallant (August 4, 1916 – May 5, 1994) was an educator, lawyer and political figure on Prince Edward Island. He represented 3rd Prince in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island from 1954 to 1959 as a Liberal. He was born in Egmont Bay, Prince Edward Island, the son of Peter Gallant and Eleanor Arsenault. Gallant was educated at Prince of Wales College and then received a teaching license from Mount Allison University. He taught school in Urbainville and was a school principal in Tignish. Gallant served as a pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II. In 1943, he married Marcella, the daughter of Joseph Alphonse Bernard. They had seven (7) children. Forrest Phillips
Forrest William Phillips (July 1, 1887 – July 8, 1972) was a farmer and political figure on Prince Edward Island. He represented 2nd Prince from 1946 to 1959 as a Liberal. He was born in Ellerslie, Prince Edward Island, the son of Thomas Henry Phillips and Eleanor Agnes Williams. In 1907, he married Gertrude MacArthur. Phillips moved to Mount Royal in 1916. Besides farming, he was also a land appraiser for the Canadian Farm Loans Board. Phillips was first elected to the provincial assembly in a 1946 by-election held after the death of William H. Dennis. He served as speaker for the assembly from 1949 to 1955. He also was a member of the province's Executive Council, serving as Minister of Welfare and Labour in 1956. Phillips died at Prince County Hospital in Summerside at the age of 85. Lloyd George Dewar, (October 20, 1915 – November 19, 2003) was a Canadians, Canadian physician and politician.
