48May is a New Zealand pop rock group. The band consists of Jon Austin (vocals, guitar), CaptainHook (guitar, vocals), Stan Bicknell (drums, vocals) and Shannon Brown (bass, vocals). Hook and Jon went to Hamilton Boys' High School together, while Stowers in the year above, was the lead singer in the band The Grinners (previously called Lyon), while Shannon Brown is well known on the New Zealand music circuit for his roles in bands such as Tadpole. The name "48May" came from their residence during university; at 48 May Street in Hamilton. Tadpole was a New Zealand rock band from Auckland led by female vocalist Renée Brennan. The band formed in June 1994 and broke apart in late 2006 after numerous changes to the line-up. Career Before 2000 Between the band's beginning and 1999, Tadpole went through many line-up changes. At one point, the members were all female except one. Vocalist Renée Brennan and drummer/manager Dean Lawton have been stable members of the band since the late 1990's. FMR Records is a British record label. Founded by Trevor Taylor in 1987, it specialises in jazz and improvised music. Origins Taylor is a drummer and percussionist who became increasingly interested in avant garde music. In the early 1970s he started Future Music, which was a record shop that expanded to seven branches. He founded the FMR (short for Future Music Records) label in 1987. Big Day Out
The Big Day Out (BDO) was an annual music festival that was held in five Australian cities: Sydney, Melbourne, Gold Coast, Adelaide, and Perth, as well as Auckland, New Zealand. The festival was held during summer, typically in January of each year but was sometimes held as late as early February in some cities including Perth. The event was conceptualised after the Violent Femmes announced a tour of Australia. Promoters Ken West and Vivian Lees sought another act as middle-level support for the band's tour. They succeeded in securing Nirvana to play the Sydney leg at the Hordern Pavilion.
