47th Grey Cup
The 47th Grey Cup was the Canadian Football League's (CFL) championship game of the 1959 season on November 28, 1959. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers defeated the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 21–7 at Toronto's CNE Stadium before a crowd of 33,133. It was the first Grey Cup held at CNE Stadium; the stadium, making various changes along the way, would host 11 more Grey Cup games in a 24 year span ending with the 70th Grey Cup game in 1982. Game summary On the first series of the game, Winnipeg drove deep and Gerry James kicked a 21-yard field goal. In the second quarter, Winnipeg's Charlie Shepard had a punt blocked by Vince Scott. The ball went into the end zone but Scott was unable to recover and it was brought out by Bomber Jack Delveaux. Hamilton were only able to score a single, leaving Winnipeg ahead at the half 3-1. CNE Stadium
Canadian National Exhibition Stadium (commonly known as Exhibition Stadium or CNE Stadium) was a multi-purpose stadium that formerly stood on the Exhibition Place grounds, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Originally built for Canadian National Exhibition events, the stadium served as the home of the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League, from 1959–1988, the Toronto Blue Jays of Major League Baseball from 1977– 1989, and the Toronto Blizzard of the North American Soccer League from 1979–1983. The stadium hosted the Grey Cup game 12 times over a 24-year period. In 1999, the stadium was demolished and the site was used for parking until 2006. BMO Field was built on the site in 2007 roughly where the northern end of the covered grandstand once stood. Gerry James
Edwin Fitzgerald (Gerry) James (born October 22, 1934) is a former professional Canadian football running back and professional ice hockey player. He played for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League (CFL) and the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League (NHL). His is a member of the Canadian Football Hall of Fame, like his father, Eddie James (Canadian football), Eddie James, who also played for the Blue Bombers. James was born in Regina, Saskatchewan. In a period overlapping the 1959 CFL season and 1959–60 NHL season, James became the only player to play in the CFL's Grey Cup (November 28, 1959—won cup) and the NHL's Stanley Cup (first game April 9, 1960—lost cup) in the same season. Ernie Pitts
Ernie Pitts (March 8, 1935 – September 24, 1970) was a Canadian Football League wide receiver and defensive back for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the BC Lions in a 14-year career in the CFL from 1957 to 1970. He won four Grey Cups with Winnipeg. In August 2019 he was inducted into the Canadian Football League Hall of Fame. Kenneth Ploen LAYN (born June 3, 1935) is a former star quarterback in American college football and for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League (CFL). College football In 1956, Ploen became the University of Iowa Hawkeyes starting quarterback. That year, he led his team to its first Big Ten Conference title in 35 years and a victory in the 1957 Rose Bowl Game. He was named an All-American and the Big Ten player of the year. Buddy Tinsley
Robert Porter "Buddy" Tinsley (August 16, 1924 – September 14, 2011) was a Canadian Football League offensive lineman for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1982, and was a member of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers Hall of Fame, the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame and the Baylor University Hall of Fame. Tinsley was born in Damon, Texas and played collegiately at Baylor. He spent one season with the NFL's Los Angeles Rams before joining the Blue Bombers, where he often played both ways at tackle. Vince Scott
Vincent Joseph "Boomer" Scott (July 10, 1925 – July 13, 1992) was a Canadian football player. He played for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, and was later a Hamilton city councillor. He became a Canadian citizen in the mid-1950s Scott was born in Le Roy, New York. He suffered from polio as a child and was left with a slightly shrunken left leg, although this did not inhibit his sports career. He made the University of Notre Dame team as a lineman, and played for two seasons with the Buffalo Bills of the AAFC before joining the Hamilton Wildcats franchise in 1949. The Wildcats merged with the Hamilton Tigers in 1950 to create the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, and Scott played for the merged team until his retirement in 1962.
