The 45th Rifle Division was a Red Army infantry division formed originally during the Russian Civil War that fought in World War II and then served through the Cold War in the Leningrad Military District. The division was originally formed 16 June 1919 in the Odessa raion from the 5th Ukrainian Rifle Division. Civil War service The 45th Rifle Division was formed from the 5th Ukrainian Rifle Division around Odessa. In August 1919, during the Odessa Operation (1919), it was cut off and retreated between the White armies and the Ukrainian People's Army to reach Bolshevik-held territory near Korosten. Second World War service First Formation It was attached to the Kiev Special Military District/Soviet Southwestern Front at the outbreak of World War II, as part of the 15th Rifle Corps, 5th Army. Odessa Operation (1919)
The Odesa operation (1919) or the Odesa landing was a successful amphibious military operation by the White Armed Forces of South Russia against the troops of the Red Army and the Odesa garrison on 20–24 August 1919. The success of the operation would have been impossible without a coordinated anti-Bolshevik insurrection in the city itself. The operation was carried out in the development of the "Moscow directive" of the AFSR (paragraph 6). Prelude Between December 1918 and April 1919, French and Greek troops had taken over control of Odesa during the Southern Russia Intervention. On April 7 1919, they evacuated the city when the pro-Bolshevik Army of Otaman Nykyfor Hryhoriv approached. In May a Red Defence Committee of the Odesa Military District was established under command of Boris Krajewski, Ivan Klimenko and Yan Gamarnik.
