The Prince Edward Island Liberal Party (officially the ''Prince Edward Island Liberal Association'') is a political party in the province of Prince Edward Island, Canada. The PEI Liberals are affiliated with the federal Liberal Party of Canada. History The party was created when PEI was a British colony by reformers who agitated for the system of responsible government. This was granted by the British crown to the colony in 1851. George Coles was its dominant figure in its first decades. While initially supportive of Canadian Confederation, Coles and the Liberals soured on the project, and it was not until 1873 that the island joined Canada as a means of relieving the PEI government's severe debts. The early party supported the abolition of school fees, and a resolution to the " Land Question" that divided the province. Marin Gallant (July 24, 1873 – October 25, 1958) was a farmer, educator and political figure on Prince Edward Island. He represented 3rd Prince in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island from 1935 to 1947 as a Liberal. He was born in South Rustico, Prince Edward Island, the son of Arcade Gallant and Virginia Blanchard, and was educated at Saint Dunstan's College. Gallant taught school in Rustico, Miscouche and Egmont Bay. In 1907, Gallant married Marie-Rose Arsenault. He was a public school inspector for French schools from 1910 to 1922 and from 1927 to 1932. George Hilton Barbour
George Hilton Barbour (September 5, 1878 – February 6, 1962) was a farmer and political figure on Prince Edward Island. He represented 2nd Prince in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island from 1935 to 1942 and from 1943 to 1949 as a Liberal. Barbour sat for Prince division in the Senate of Canada from 1949 to 1962. He was born in Alma, Prince Edward Island, the son of Thomas Archibald Barbour and Mary Currie, and was educated there and in Boston, Massachusetts. In 1907, he married Carrie Elora Casely. After operating a farm and raising livestock for several years, Barbour became a constable in Alberton, later moving to Howlan. He served as chief prohibition inspector from 1918 to 1927, moving to Summerside in 1923. In 1927, he moved to Charlottetown to become district chief of the Customs and Excise Department.
