411 Seniors Centre
The 411 Seniors Centre is a registered society, located at #705-333 Terminal Avenue Vancouver, British Columbia. It specializes in programs for moderate to low income seniors in the Vancouver area. History In 2012, 411 Seniors Centre relocated to Terminal Avenue in Vancouver. The 411 Seniors Centre Society owned and operated the 4 storey tall building at Dunsmuir and Homer Streets from 2006 to 2012. The Vancouver Trades and Labour Council erected this building in 1910 from union members' contributions. The building has had a long list of occupants and the provincial government took over its ownership in 1921. 411 Seniors itself began in 1947 when seniors programs occupied the first two floors, and the society itself was constituted in 1972. 411 Seniors is best known for its income tax and information referral advocacy programs and services. 1918 Vancouver General Strike
The Vancouver general strike which took place on 2 August 1918, was the first general strike in Canadian history. There had been talks of organizing a general strike for quite some time due to federal conscription, censorship of socialist publications, and workers' demands for higher wages. War-time inflation reduced real income profoundly and throughout the First World War Vancouver shipbuilders experienced a labour shortage. Numerous government policies had suppressed the work of labour activists such as strikes, lockouts and certain presses being banned. Workers were also inspired by factors such as the Bolshevik Revolution the previous year and the rising cost of living. The strike was eventually organized as a one-day political protest after the killing of draft evader and labour activist Albert "Ginger" Goodwin on 27 July. Alberta First Nations peoples in Alberta were generally nomadic and did not create permanent structures, however they did often occupy the same site annually for many generations, and created permanent markers in the form of tipi rings and medicine wheels. The first Europeans to build in Alberta were the fur traders of the North West Company who constructed the first trading posts in Alberta at Fort Chipewyan and Fort Vermilion in 1788. A senior center (or senior centre) is a type of community center where older adults congregate for fellowship with others to fulfill many of their social, physical, emotional, and intellectual needs. A regular part of senior centers is card and board games, along with video games as that generation moves into old age.
