Prince Edward Island Liberal Party
The Prince Edward Island Liberal Party (officially the ''Prince Edward Island Liberal Association'') is a political party in the province of Prince Edward Island, Canada. The PEI Liberals are affiliated with the federal Liberal Party of Canada. History The party was created when PEI was a British colony by reformers who agitated for the system of responsible government. This was granted by the British crown to the colony in 1851. George Coles was its dominant figure in its first decades. While initially supportive of Canadian Confederation, Coles and the Liberals soured on the project, and it was not until 1873 that the island joined Canada as a means of relieving the PEI government's severe debts. The early party supported the abolition of school fees, and a resolution to the " Land Question" that divided the province. Joseph-Octave Arsenault
Joseph-Octave Arsenault (August 5, 1828 – December 14, 1897) was a Canadian politician who was the first Acadian from Prince Edward Island to be named to the Senate of Canada. Born in Cascumpec, Prince Edward Island, the son of Mélème Arsenault and Bibienne Poirier, he was a teacher, and later the owner of several businesses, including two general stores and a fish company. In 1867, he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island for the riding of 3rd Prince and served for 28 years. In 1895, he was appointed to the Senate representing the senatorial division of Prince Edward Island. He served until his death in Abram-Village in 1897. In 1861, he married Gertrude Gaudet. John Archibald Matheson
John Archibald Matheson (September 3, 1844 – March 20, 1919) was a merchant and politician in Prince Edward Island. He represented 1st Prince in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island from 1883 to 1893. He was born in Black River, Queens County, Prince Edward Island, the son of John Matheson, a Scottish immigrant. He was educated there and in Charlottetown. He worked for George Howlan before establishing his own business, operating as a general merchant and also being involved in fishing. In 1881, he married Emily M. Clowser. Matheson was a justice of the peace and postmaster. His election in 1883 was declared invalid but he was reelected in the by-election held later that same year.
