3x3 Basketball In Puerto Rico
In order to promote the popularity of the sport, FIBA decided to organize tournaments based on the streetball variant of 3-on-3 in 2010, mainly due to its predominance even in countries without basketball tradition, creating a division named FIBA 3x3. Team San Juan, based on the municipality of the same name, was the champion of the first edition of the FIBA 3x3 World Tour. The Puerto Rico men's national 3x3 team has won medals in the Pan American and Central American and Caribbean Games. Streetball In Puerto Rico
Linked to the popularity of basketball in Puerto Rico, the recurrence of streetball has become intertwined with the practice of the sport in all of its levels. Taking influence from the grassroots connection of Nuyorican streetballers to the Baloncesto Superior Nacional, the practice is widespread in Puerto Rico, with impromptu games being a highly common occurrence for decades. Organized streetball gained momentum in the early 2000s and soon became involved with the local urban culture, especially the hip hop and reggaeton industries, giving origin to teams like Puerto Rico Streetball and the Puerto Rico Streetballers. 3x3 basketball (pronounced ''three-ex-three'') is a variation of basketball played three-a-side, with one backboard and in a half-court setup. According to an ESSEC Business School study commissioned by the International Olympic Committee, 3x3 is the largest urban team sport in the world. Team San Juan (Spanish: Equipo San Juan) is a men's professional 3x3 basketball club based in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The team plays in the FIBA 3x3 World Tour, of which it was the first champion by winning the inaugural tournament in 2012. The FIBA 3x3 World Tour is an international tour of men's 3x3 basketball teams representing cities. The tournament is organized by FIBA. The FIBA 3x3 Pro Series and FIBA 3x3 Women Series were launched in 2019. ''El Vocero de Puerto Rico'' is a Puerto Rican free newspaper that is published in San Juan. Published since 1974, ''El Vocero'' was at first the third of the four largest Puerto Rico newspapers, trailing '' El Mundo'' and ''El Nuevo Día'' and leading '' El Reportero'' and ''The San Juan Star'' in sales.
