3rd Legislative Assembly Of Saskatchewan
The 3rd Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan was elected in the Saskatchewan general election held in July 1912. The assembly sat from November 14, 1912, to June 2, 1917. The Liberal Party led by Walter Scott formed the government. Scott resigned as premier on October 16, 1916, and was succeeded by William Melville Martin. The Conservative Party of Saskatchewan led by Wellington Willoughby formed the official opposition. 1912 Saskatchewan General Election
The 1912 Saskatchewan general election was held on July 11, 1912 to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan. Premier Walter Scott led the Liberal Party of Saskatchewan to a third term in office with a significant increase in the share of the popular vote. The opposition, now renamed from the Provincial Rights Party to the Conservative Party of Saskatchewan and led by Wellington Bartley Willoughby, lost both votes and seats in the legislature. Results Notes: * 1 Results compared to those of Provincial Rights Party in 1908 election, which became the Conservative Party. * 2 There were 54 seats contested at the 1912 election, however Cumberland was declared void and only 53 people were elected. A by-election was held on September 8, 1913 to fill the vacancy that existed in Cumberland. John Duncan Stewart
John Duncan Stewart (October 16, 1859 – 1921) was a farmer and political figure in Saskatchewan. He represented Cannington in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan from 1905 to 1921 as a Liberal. He was born in Perth County, Canada West, and was educated there. Stewart received homestead land in Saskatchewan in 1882. He lived in Arcola, Saskatchewan and was manager for the Arcola Farmers' Elevator Company. James Walter MacNeill
Dr. James MacNeill (March 24, 1873 – July 1, 1945) was the first superintendent of Saskatchewan Hospital, North Battleford for mentally ill patients in the province of Saskatchewan. He was born in Prince Edward Island, educated at Prince of Wales College and McGill University, where he received an MD degree in 1901. He practiced in New Brunswick and then moved to Hanley, Saskatchewan in 1906 where he practiced as family physician until 1912. He was elected to the Saskatchewan Legislature in 1908 as a Liberal member until 1913. He traveled to England and the USA in 1913, where he studied the administration mental hospitals for his new role as the medical superintendent of Saskatchewan Hospital. He served in this position until 1945. At Saskatchewan Hospital, he changed the organization and program delivery from that of a prison and asylum to that of a modern (for the time) mental health hospital. Daniel Cameron Lochead
Daniel Cameron Lochead (January 19, 1878 – March 14, 1946) was a physician, farmer and political figure in Saskatchewan. He represented Gull Lake from 1912 to 1917 as a Liberal. He was born in Almonte, Ontario and educated at Trinity College and the Toronto Medical School, receiving his M.D. Lochead moved to Wales, North Dakota, where he practised medicine from 1906 to 1910. In 1910, he moved to Saskatchewan, settling north of Gull Lake. Lochead married Mrs. Ann Hill (née Frank). He raised pigs on his farm. Lochead served in the army during World War I. Cypress is a former provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of the province of Saskatchewan, Canada. This district was created before the 3rd Saskatchewan general election in 1912 as "Gull Lake". Since the district encompassed most of the Saskatchewan side of the Cypress Hills, the riding was renamed "Cypress" in 1917. Walter George Robinson (July 19, 1873 – 1949) was an insurance and loan agent and political figure in Saskatchewan, Canada. He represented Francis in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan from 1912 to 1929 as a Liberal. Robinson was born at Mascouche Rapids, Quebec, the son of Thomas Robinson and Sarah Jane McCurdy. George Alexander Bell
George Alexander Bell (August 3, 1856 – September 13, 1927) was a blacksmith and political figure in Saskatchewan. He represented Estevan in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan from 1908 to 1918 as a Liberal. He was born in Brant County, Ontario, the son of David Bell, a native of Scotland, and was educated in Colborne township in Huron County. He apprenticed as a blacksmith and came west to Winnipeg in 1882, where he worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway. In 1883, Bell married Elizabeth Smith. After leaving the railway, he established a blacksmith shop in Melita, Manitoba. In 1900, he moved to Saskatchewan to work as a Dominion lands inspector for the Estevan district. He settled in Estevan, Saskatchewan. Bell served in the provincial cabinet as Provincial Treasurer and Minister of Telephones.
