The Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences Awards (also known as the FAMAS Awards) are the annual honors given by the Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences (FAMAS), an organization composed of award-winning writers and movie columnists, for achievements in Philippine cinema for a calendar year. Members of the academy including avid movie viewers, fans or enthusiasts cast their votes on who should win the statuettes in the different categories they were nominated. Established in 1952, it is the oldest existing film industry award-giving body in the Philippines (as of 2013) and one of the oldest in Asia. The FAMAS Award, from 1952 to 1982, was the highest Filipino film award a filmmaker or artisan could receive in the local movie industry. Gloria Anne Borrego Galla (born December 16, 1933), known professionally as Gloria Romero (), is a multi-awarded Filipino actress, regarded as the “Queen of Philippine Movies”, her career spans over 70 years, and she has starred in over 200 films and television programs. Dorothy Guinto Jones (January 6, 1936 – November 7, 2001), popularly known by her stage name Nida Blanca, was a Filipina actress. After a successful acting career in films during the 1950s, many of which are with actor Nestor de Villa, she gained further prominence in television for her role in the sitcom John en Marsha (1973–1990). Claire Dizon Strauss (1928 – June 15, 2020) professionally known as Lilia Dizon was a Filipina actress active in the 1940s and 1950s. Personal life She was the only daughter of Regina Dizon, a Filipino, and Abraham "Abe" Strauss, an American of German Jewish descent. At the age of 15, she and her mother relocated to Manila from Baguio following the Second World War after her father left for America and then, she started performing in the theater under the name "Carol Strauss". She was the wife of LVN Pictures actor Gil de León, with whom she had three children who would each eventually become actors as well: Pinky de Leon, Christopher de Leon and Melissa de Leon. She had a second husband, Antonio V. Abad with whom she had two daughters Toni Abad and Cori Abad. She retired from showbiz during the 1980s. ''Ilocana Maiden'' ( fil, Dalagang Ilocana), is a 1954 Filipino romantic comedy film produced by Sampaguita Pictures. The film is in black and white and was directed by Olive La Torre. It was also serialized over DZRH Sampaguita Radio Program. The movie also launched the career of Tita de Villa. Background Olive La Torre directed Gloria Romero as a spirited, cigar-chomping country girl who rolls tobacco leaves into cigars for a living. Romero is a wonderful comedian, combining as she does a stately beauty and aristocratic nose with eyes that slant just (and maddeningly) so, plus a sense of humor game enough to undercut her impeccable poise; Dolphy does well in a supporting role as comic sidekick with an insatiable appetite.
