38–39 Bayley Lane
38–39 Bayley Lane is a former building, whose present-day site is accessible from the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum in Coventry, England. All that remains is the medieval undercroft, a fourteenth-century cellar that initially belonged to a wealthy merchant, who was a clothier. The undercroft is built with sandstone with a stone-ribbed vault for added security and strength. It is a Grade I listed building. History The area of Bayley Lane that the building was located in was occupied by wealthy merchants in the late medieval period. Following the earlier levelling of Coventry Castle, the area would have been undeveloped. Bayley Lane likely emerged as a route through the former castle bailey or outer court. The status of the area grew after the establishment of St Mary's Guildhall, followed by the construction of Drapers Hall. Herbert Art Gallery And Museum
Herbert Art Gallery & Museum (also known as the Herbert) is a museum, art gallery, records archive, learning centre, media studio and creative arts facility on Jordan Well, Coventry, England. Overview The museum is named after Sir Alfred Herbert, a Coventry industrialist and philanthropist whose gifts enabled the original building to be opened in 1960. Building began in 1939, with an interruption by the Second World War, and the Herbert opened in 1960. In 2008, it reopened after a £14 million refurbishment. The Herbert is run by Culture Coventry, a registered charity, and admission is free. It derives financial support from donations, sales at the museum shop, and hiring the buildings out. St Mary's Guildhall
St Mary's Hall is a municipal building in Bayley Lane in Coventry, West Midlands (region), West Midlands, England. It is a Grade I listed building. History The building was built in the Medieval architecture, Medieval style between 1340 and 1342 and much altered and extended in 1460. The guildhall originally served as the headquarters of the merchant guild of St Mary, and subsequently of the united guilds of the Holy Trinity, St Mary, St John the Baptist and St Katherine. Following the suppression of the chantries and religious guilds under Edward VI of England, King Edward VI in 1547, for a time it served as the city's armoury and as its treasury (until 1822), as well as the headquarters for administration for the city council (until the Council House, Coventry, Council House opened in 1920).
