Tengen (Go)
Tengen (天元, ''center'' or ''origin of heaven'') is a Go competition in Japan. The name Tengen refers to the center point on a Go board. The event is held annually, and has run continuously since its inauguration in 1975. Tengen competition (天元戦) The Tengen competition is a Go tournament run by the Japanese Nihon-Kiin and Kansai-Kiin. The Tengen is the 5th of the 7 big titles in Japanese Go. It has the same format as the other tournaments. There is a preliminary tournament, which is single knockout, where the winner faces the holder in a best-of-five match. Before the 6th Tengen, the format was different. Instead of the title holder waiting for a challenger, it would be the two Go players left from the single knockout tournament who then played a best-of-five match to determine the holder. The tournament was formed from a merger between the Nihon Ki-in and Kansai Ki-in championships. The former ran from 1954 to 1975. Past winners Trivia * The first player to ... Kim Shushun (born January 24, 1979), also known as Kin Hidetoshi, Kim Shujun, or Kim Sujun, is a professional Go player. Biography Kim became a professional in 1996. In 2007, he was promoted to 8 dan. His teacher is Cho Chikun. He made it to the final of the 16th NEC Shun-Ei, only to be beaten by Mizokami Tomochika. Coincidentally, he played the game on the same day as his teacher, Cho Chikun, played in the final of the NEC Cup. He won his 400th career game in 2006. is a Japanese professional Go player. In April 2016, he became the first player in Japanese history to hold all seven major titles simultaneously. In January 2018, Iyama became the first professional Go player to be awarded Japan's People's Honour Award. Biography Born in Osaka, Iyama became the first professional of the Heisei period. He began playing Go at the age of five and reached the rank of 3 dan amateur a year later. It was at this time Kunio Ishii became Iyama's teacher, with the two playing thousands of games online. He won the national elementary school championship twice, in 1997 and 1998. Iyama became an insei in October 1998 and challenged for a professional spot in 2001. He lost to Kohei Kawada.
