36th Legislative Assembly Of British Columbia
The 36th Legislative Assembly of British Columbia sat from 1996 to 2001. The members were elected in the British Columbia general election held in May 1996. The New Democratic Party (NDP) led by Glen Clark formed the government. Clark resigned as premier in August 1999; Dan Miller served as interim premier until a leadership election was held in February 2000 where Ujjal Dosanjh became party leader and premier. The Liberals led by Gordon Campbell formed the official opposition. Dale Lovick served as speaker for the assembly until 1998 when Gretchen Brewin became speaker. Brewin served as speaker until 2000; William James Hartley replaced Brewin as speaker for the remaining sessions. 1996 British Columbia General Election
The 1996 British Columbia general election was the 36th provincial election in the Province of British Columbia, Canada. It was held to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia. The election was called on April 30, 1996, and held on May 28, 1996. Voter turnout was 59.1 per cent of all eligible voters. The election is notable for producing a "false-winner" outcome, rewarding a party that got second in the popular vote with a majority government. New Democratic Party leader and provincial premier Mike Harcourt had resigned as the result of a fundraising scandal involving one of the members of his caucus. Glen Clark was chosen by the party to replace Harcourt. Jim Doyle (born October 28, 1943) is a politician in British Columbia, Canada. Doyle held public office for 30 years; five years as a councillor; fifteen as Golden’s Mayor, and ten years as a Member of the Legislative Assembly and Cabinet Minister. Doyle is Golden’s longest serving Mayor. Early life Doyle was born in County Down, Ireland. His passion for politics was sparked while working in Brisbane, Australia before emigrating to Canada in 1967. Chilliwack (electoral District)
Chilliwack has been a provincial electoral district in the Canadian province of British Columbia since 1916. Incorporating slightly different boundaries, it was the successor riding to the Chilliwhack riding the name of which was based on the older spelling of the name. Political geography and history Chilliwack was the successor riding to Westminster-Chilliwhack, which was one of four subdivisions of the old rural Westminster riding, the others being the ridings that became, after similar name-changes, Delta, Dewdney and Richmond, which are the parent ridings of all current Fraser Valley electoral districts. Barry Penner
Barry Penner, is a Canadian licensed lawyer and former politician in the province of British Columbia. He served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia (MLA) for Chilliwack-Hope for 16 years. David Zirnhelt
David Zirnhelt (born 1947) is a Canadian politician, businessman and rancher from British Columbia. A member of the British Columbia New Democratic Party, he was a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Cariboo and Cariboo South from 1989 to 2001. Early life and career Zirnhelt was born in Williams Lake, British Columbia, located in the Cariboo region of the province's central interior. John Wilson (British Columbia Politician)
John Wilson (born 1944) is a Canadian cattle rancher, veterinarian and former politician, who served as a BC Liberal Member of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia from 1996 to 2005, representing the riding of Cariboo North. She served as a NDP Member of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia from 1991 to 2001, representing Burnaby-Willingdon.
