34th Texas Cavalry Regiment
The 34th Texas Cavalry Regiment was a unit of mounted volunteers from Texas that fought in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. Almerine M. Alexander organized the regiment from north Texas recruits in the winter of 1861–1862. The unit marched to Indian Territory in May 1862 where it joined a brigade commanded by Douglas H. Cooper. The regiment fought at Newtonia and McGuire's Store in fall 1862 afterward was dismounted. The regiment served as infantry at Prairie Grove in December 1862. It received orders to transfer to Louisiana in April 1863. The regiment joined a brigade led by Camille de Polignac in July 1863. The following year, the unit fought at Mansfield, Pleasant Hill, and Yellow Bayou during the Red River Campaign. In March 1865 the regiment was assigned to the Texas Infantry Division. Cavalry
Historically, cavalry (from the French word ''cavalerie'', itself derived from "cheval" meaning "horse") are soldiers or warriors who fight mounted on horseback. Cavalry were the most mobile of the combat arms, operating as light cavalry in the roles of reconnaissance, screening, and skirmishing in many armies, or as heavy cavalry for decisive shock attacks in other armies. Walker's Greyhounds
Walker's Greyhounds was the popular name for a division of the Confederate States Army under Major-General John George Walker, composed exclusively of units from Texas. It fought in the Western Theater and the Trans-Mississippi Department, gaining its nickname because the men were able to move long distances rapidly on foot. Organization Walker's Greyhounds, also known as Walker's Texas Division, was mustered at Camp Nelson, Arkansas, in July 1862. It was placed under the command of Maj. Gen. John George Walker in November 1862, and remained under his command until the end of the war. The division served exclusively in the Trans-Mississippi Department. Camille Armand Jules Marie, Prince De Polignac
Prince Camille Armand Jules Marie de Polignac (February 16, 1832 – November 15, 1913) was a French nobleman who served with the Confederates in the American Civil War, living on to become the last surviving Confederate major-general. After service in the French army in the Crimea, Polignac was travelling in America at the outbreak of war, when he sided with the South. He distinguished himself as a brigadier in the Red River Campaign, notably at the Battle of Mansfield, after which he was promoted to the rank of divisional commander. Polignac was affectionately known by his troops, unable to decipher how to pronounce his name, as "Prince Polecat". which he apparently found amusing.
