Confederation Building (Newfoundland And Labrador)
The Confederation Building serves as the home of the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly. It is located on Confederation Hill overlooking Newfoundland and Labrador's capital city, St. John's. The brick- and concrete-clad building has 11 stories and is tall. It was completed in 1960 at a cost of $9 million to replace the Colonial Building. A lantern is located at the top of the copper roof of the central tower and acts as a beacon when turned on at night. In 1982, construction began on the West Block extension, a modern 7-storey structure, which is a six-storey building, with a gross floor area of . Bonavista South is a former provincial electoral district for the House of Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. As of 2011 the district had 6,843 eligible voters. Ambrose Hubert Peddle (8 October 1927 – 10 March 2014) was a Canadian politician. Born in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, Peddle worked for Newfoundland Railway from 1945 to 1947 and Customs & Excise from 1947 to 1949. From 1949 to 1951, he worked for the Government of Canada's Unemployment Insurance Commission. From 1951 to 1963, he was a sales manager at a retail furniture and appliances store. From 1963 to 1975, he was the owner of Small Business Enterprises. From 1961 to 1966, he was Mayor of Windsor, Newfoundland and Labrador. He was elected to the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly in 1962. Beaton Abbott
Beaton J. Abbott (1903 – March 8, 1992) was an educator, magistrate and politician in Newfoundland. He represented Gander from 1956 to 1966 and Bonavista North from 1966 to 1971 in the Newfoundland House of Assembly. He was born in Musgrave Harbour and was educated there, at St. John's Methodist College and at La Salle. Fortune Bay—Cape La Hune is a provincial electoral district for the House of Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. When created in 1975 it was called Fortune-Hermitage. Edward Spencer (Canadian Politician)
Edward Samuel Spencer (January 2, 1893 – June 17, 1973) was a civil engineer and politician in Newfoundland. He represented Grand Falls from 1949 to 1959, Bonavista North from 1959 to 1962 and Fogo from 1962 to 1966 in the Newfoundland House of Assembly. The son of Edward Thomas Spencer and Sarah Roberts, he was born in Pilley's Island and received his primary education in Newfoundland, going on to study engineering with the International Correspondence School of Scranton, Pennsylvania. He began work with the Nova Scotia Steel Company at Wabana in 1908, as a surveyor and then assistant engineer. In 1914, Spencer married Daisie E. Sellars. In 1923, he became work as an engineer working on highways for the Newfoundland government. He was in charge of construction of the Botwood seaplane base and then was maintenance engineer at Gander airport. Ferryland (electoral District)
Ferryland is a provincial electoral district for the House of Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. As of 2011, there are 8,571 eligible voters living within the district. This was the most strongly anti-Confederation area of the province in the late 1940s, but turned Liberal in the 1950s and 1960s. It is historically a fishing district, but tourism has been growing. Myles Murray
Myles P. Murray (October 22, 1906 – April 15, 1985) was a Canadian politician and lawyer. He represented the electoral district of Ferryland in the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly from 1952 to 1966. He was a member of the Liberal Party of Newfoundland and Labrador. The son of Mary and Michael Murray, he was born in Murray's Pond, Portugal Cove. Murray was educated at Saint Bonaventure's College and Memorial University College. He articled in the law offices of William R. Howley, was called to the Newfoundland bar in 1930 and set up practice in St. John's. He married Doreen Whitaker in 1941; the couple had two sons. Grand Bank is a defunct provincial electoral district for the House of Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Prior to the 1974 redistribution, the district was called Burin. The district was abolished in 2015 and replaced by Burin-Grand Bank. Grand Bank covers the southernmost part of the Burin Peninsula. The fishery, particularly deep-sea activity, has historically driven the economy of towns like Grand Bank, Fortune and Lawn. Mining was once prominent in St. Lawrence area, but no longer.
