32nd General Assembly Of Newfoundland
The members of the 32nd General Assembly of Newfoundland were elected in the Newfoundland general election held in August 1959. The general assembly sat from April 20, 1960, to October 23, 1962. Confederation Building (Newfoundland And Labrador)
The Confederation Building serves as the home of the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly. It is located on Confederation Hill overlooking Newfoundland and Labrador's capital city, St. John's. The brick- and concrete-clad building has 11 stories and is tall. It was completed in 1960 at a cost of $9 million to replace the Colonial Building. A lantern is located at the top of the copper roof of the central tower and acts as a beacon when turned on at night. In 1982, construction began on the West Block extension, a modern 7-storey structure, which is a six-storey building, with a gross floor area of . Raymond Guy
Raymond Winston Guy (July 5, 1912 – November 24, 2000) was a businessperson and politician in Newfoundland. He represented Grand Falls from 1959 to 1962 in the Newfoundland House of Assembly. The son of Simeon and Jessie Guy, he was born in Musgrave Harbour and was educated there. Guy married Gilliam Spooner. He was hired as a clerk by a store in Musgrave Harbour in 1929 and then moved to Grand Falls in 1935 where he was employed as a retail manager. Guy served in the Royal Navy during World War II. He returned to work as a retail manager after the war. After retiring from politics, he returned again to retail work until 1965 when he became deputy director for the Emergency Measures Organization at St. John's. Beaton J. Abbott (1903 – March 8, 1992) was an educator, magistrate and politician in Newfoundland. He represented Gander from 1956 to 1966 and Bonavista North from 1966 to 1971 in the Newfoundland House of Assembly. Fortune Bay—Cape La Hune is a provincial electoral district for the House of Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. When created in 1975 it was called Fortune-Hermitage. Isaac Mercer
Isaac Mercer (September 3, 1912 – 2002) was a lawyer and politician in Newfoundland. He represented Port de Grave from 1951 to 1956 and Fogo from 1956 to 1961 in the Newfoundland House of Assembly. The son of William and Maria Mercer, he was born in Sunnyside, Trinity Bay in 1912 and was educated in local schools, at Bishop Feild College, at Memorial University and at Dalhousie University. He was admitted to the bars of Newfoundland and Nova Scotia in 1938 and began the practice of law in St. John's. In 1942, Mercer married Ruby Tucker. He formed a law firm in partnership with Arthur S. Mifflin and Fabian O'Dea. In 1948, Mercer was named King's Counsel. He was first elected to the Newfoundland assembly in 1951. Ferryland (electoral District)
Ferryland is a provincial electoral district for the House of Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. As of 2011, there are 8,571 eligible voters living within the district. This was the most strongly anti-Confederation area of the province in the late 1940s, but turned Liberal in the 1950s and 1960s. It is historically a fishing district, but tourism has been growing. Myles Murray
Myles P. Murray (October 22, 1906 – April 15, 1985) was a Canadian politician and lawyer. He represented the electoral district of Ferryland in the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly from 1952 to 1966. He was a member of the Liberal Party of Newfoundland and Labrador. The son of Mary and Michael Murray, he was born in Murray's Pond, Portugal Cove. Murray was educated at Saint Bonaventure's College and Memorial University College. He articled in the law offices of William R. Howley, was called to the Newfoundland bar in 1930 and set up practice in St. John's. He married Doreen Whitaker in 1941; the couple had two sons.
