32-40 Ballard
The .32-40 Ballard (also called .32-40 Winchester) is an American rifle cartridge. Description Introduced in 1884, the .32-40 was developed as a black powder match-grade round for the Ballard single-shot Union Hill Nos. 8 and 9 target rifles. Using a bullet and of black powder (muzzle velocity , muzzle energy ), the factory load gained a reputation for fine accuracy, with a midrange trajectory of at .Barnes, p.47. It was available in Winchester and Marlin lever-action rifles beginning in 1886. It and the .38-55 were chambered for the Model 1894 Winchester when it came out in 1894. A cartridge or a round is a type of pre-assembled firearm ammunition packaging a projectile (bullet, shot, or slug), a propellant substance (usually either smokeless powder or black powder) and an ignition device (primer) within a metallic, paper, or plastic case that is precisely made to fit within the barrel chamber of a breechloading gun, for the practical purpose of convenient transportation and handling during shooting. Gunpowder, also commonly known as black powder to distinguish it from modern smokeless powder, is the earliest known chemical explosive. It consists of a mixture of sulfur, carbon (in the form of charcoal) and potassium nitrate (saltpeter). The sulfur and carbon act as fuels while the saltpeter is an oxidizer. Gunpowder has been widely used as a propellant in firearms, artillery, rocketry, and pyrotechnics, including use as a blasting agent for explosives in quarrying, mining, building pipelines and road building. Match-grade
Match grade frequently refers to quality firearm parts and ammunition that are suitable for a competitive match. Sometimes it also refers to other devices and parts that are made with high precision in mind. Ballard Rifle
The Ballard Rifle was a single shot, breechloading longarm used during the late American Civil War by Kentucky volunteers. History The Ballard Rifle was designed and patented by Charles H. Ballard in November 1861 in Worcester, Massachusetts. Around 3,000 were made between 1862 and 1865, with some being used for military use in Kentucky. Ballard rifles used by Kentucky Volunteers will have Kentucky marked on them. Variants Variants were built by Ball & Williams (1862–1865), Dwight Chapin & Co. (1862–1863), and later by R. Ball & Co. Winchester Repeating Arms Company
The Winchester Repeating Arms Company was a prominent American manufacturer of repeating firearms and ammunition. The firm was established in 1866 by Oliver Winchester and was located in New Haven, Connecticut. The firm went into receivership in 1931 and was bought by the Western Cartridge Company, a forerunner of the Olin Corporation. The Winchester brand name is still owned by the Olin Corporation, which makes ammunition under that name.
