31 Combat Engineer Regiment (The Elgins)
31 Combat Engineer Regiment (31 CER or "The Elgin's"), is currently a combat engineer regiment of the Canadian Armed Forces, supporting 31 Canadian Brigade Group of the 4th Canadian Division (formerly Land Force Central Area). It consists of two squadrons: 48 Engineer Squadron in Waterloo, Ontario, and 7 Engineer Squadron in St. Thomas, Ontario. The Elgin's existed before the Confederation of Canada, tracing their origin to 1866 when the Militia Act officially created the 25th, Elgin, Battalion of Infantry from five local militia companies. The 31st Iowa Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Service The 31st Iowa Infantry was organized at Davenport, Iowa and mustered in for three years of Federal service on October 13, 1862. The regiment was mustered out on June 27, 1865. Total strength and casualties A total of 1177 men served in the 31st Iowa at one time or another during its existence. It suffered 1 officer and 27 enlisted men who were killed in action or who died of their wounds and 3 officers and 272 enlisted men who died of disease, for a total of 303 fatalities. The 31st Wisconsin Infantry Regiment was a volunteer infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Service The 31st Wisconsin was organized at Prairie du Chien and Racine, Wisconsin, and mustered into Federal service December 24, 1862. Companies A-F were mustered out on June 20, 1865. Companies G-K followed on July 8, 1865. Casualties The 31st Wisconsin suffered 23 enlisted men killed in action or who later died of their wounds, plus another 3 officers and 86 enlisted men who died of disease, for a total of 112 fatalities. The 31st United States Colored Infantry was an infantry regiment raised in New York State during the American Civil War that recruited black soldiers. History The Regiment was raised at Hart Island on 29 April 1864, and became active on 14 November 1864, in Virginia. The 30th Connecticut Colored Volunteers was amalgamated into it on 18 May 1864. The commanding officer was Colonel Henry C. Ward. Among the regiments recruits were Bermudians Robert Tappin (who had previously served in the United States Navy from 1863 to 1864), John Wilson and Joseph Thomas. The 31st New York Infantry Regiment, "Baxter's Light Guard" or the "Montezuma Regiment", was an infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The 31st Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry, nicknamed the "Dirty-First," was an infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The 31st (Greater London) Signal Regiment was a territorial communications regiment of the British Army's Royal Corps of Signals. The regiment first formed following the creation of the Territorial and Army Volunteer Reserve in 1967 after the 1966 Defence White Paper. After seeing limited reserve support during the Cold War, the regiment was disbanded in 2010 following the initial Army 2020 reform. 31st Reserve Field Artillery Regiment (Ireland)
The 31st Reserve Field Artillery Regiment was a field artillery unit of the Southern Brigade Irish Reserve Defence Forces tasked with the defence of part of County Tipperary and also with providing support to the 1st FAR, a unit of the Irish Army. History The Corps of Artillery of the Irish Army was founded in 1924, and based in Connolly Barracks in the Curragh Camp. The Patron saint of the corps is Saint Barbara, and she appears on the corps insignia sitting astride a cannon. The 31st FAR came into being on 1 October 2005, and was made up of units from the former reserve structure, the FCÁ. The units which were disbanded in order to form the new 31st FAR were the 8th FAR (Cork), 3rd FAR (Tipperary) and part of the 14th Infantry Battalion also from Tipperary.
