31st General Assembly Of Newfoundland
The members of the 31st General Assembly of Newfoundland were elected in the Newfoundland general election held in October 1956. The general assembly sat from March 19, 1957, to July 28, 1959. The Liberal Party led by Joey Smallwood formed the government. John R. Courage served as speaker. Colonial Building
The Colonial Building is a historic government building located in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The building was the home of the colonial and later provincial Newfoundland and Labrador, Newfoundland government and the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly, House of Assembly from January 28, 1850 to July 28, 1959. In 1974, it was declared a Provincial Historic Site. In 1832 when the Colony of Newfoundland governed itself by representative government there was not a formal building assigned to house the legislature. The first home of the Legislature was a tavern and Public house, lodging house on Duckworth Street owned and operated by a Mrs. Mary Widdicombe Travers, Mary Travers. Burgeo-La Poile
Burgeo-La Poile is a provincial electoral district for the House of Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. As of 2011, there are 7,527 eligible voters living within the district. The district was first created when Newfoundland joined confederation in 1949 as Burgeo and La Poile, and existed until 1975. It was recreated in 1995 following a reduction in the number of seats in the House of Assembly from 52 to 48, forming from the amalgamation of the former districts of La Poile and Burgeo-Bay D'Espoir. The district takes in the southwestern corner of Newfoundland, stretching from the town of Burgeo in the east to Cape Ray in the west. Its largest community, Port aux Basques, is the island's link to continental North America through the Marine Atlantic ferry service. The population in the region dropped by about 15 per cent between 1996 and 2001. Grand Falls-Windsor—Buchans is a provincial electoral district for the House of Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Prior to 2006, the district was Grand Falls-Buchans, while expanded slightly in all directions it took in no major municipalities. Edward Spencer (Canadian Politician)
Edward Samuel Spencer (January 2, 1893 – June 17, 1973) was a civil engineer and politician in Newfoundland. He represented Grand Falls from 1949 to 1959, Bonavista North from 1959 to 1962 and Fogo from 1962 to 1966 in the Newfoundland House of Assembly. The son of Edward Thomas Spencer and Sarah Roberts, he was born in Pilley's Island and received his primary education in Newfoundland, going on to study engineering with the International Correspondence School of Scranton, Pennsylvania. He began work with the Nova Scotia Steel Company at Wabana in 1908, as a surveyor and then assistant engineer. In 1914, Spencer married Daisie E. Sellars. In 1923, he became work as an engineer working on highways for the Newfoundland government. He was in charge of construction of the Botwood seaplane base and then was maintenance engineer at Gander airport. Beaton J. Abbott (1903 – March 8, 1992) was an educator, magistrate and politician in Newfoundland. He represented Gander from 1956 to 1966 and Bonavista North from 1966 to 1971 in the Newfoundland House of Assembly. He was born in Musgrave Harbour and was educated there, at St. John's Methodist College and at La Salle. Fortune Bay—Cape La Hune is a provincial electoral district for the House of Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. When created in 1975 it was called Fortune-Hermitage. The Isles of Notre Dame, formerly called Twillingate and Fogo, is a defunct provincial electoral district for the House of Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. As of 2011 the district had 6,990 eligible voters. The district was abolished in 2015 and largely replaced by Lewisporte-Twillingate. Isaac Mercer
Isaac Mercer (September 3, 1912 – 2002) was a lawyer and politician in Newfoundland. He represented Port de Grave from 1951 to 1956 and Fogo from 1956 to 1961 in the Newfoundland House of Assembly. The son of William and Maria Mercer, he was born in Sunnyside, Trinity Bay in 1912 and was educated in local schools, at Bishop Feild College, at Memorial University and at Dalhousie University. He was admitted to the bars of Newfoundland and Nova Scotia in 1938 and began the practice of law in St. John's. In 1942, Mercer married Ruby Tucker. He formed a law firm in partnership with Arthur S. Mifflin and Fabian O'Dea. In 1948, Mercer was named King's Counsel. He was first elected to the Newfoundland assembly in 1951. Ferryland (electoral District)
Ferryland is a provincial electoral district for the House of Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. As of 2011, there are 8,571 eligible voters living within the district. This was the most strongly anti-Confederation area of the province in the late 1940s, but turned Liberal in the 1950s and 1960s. It is historically a fishing district, but tourism has been growing. Myles Murray
Myles P. Murray (October 22, 1906 – April 15, 1985) was a Canadian politician and lawyer. He represented the electoral district of Ferryland in the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly from 1952 to 1966. He was a member of the Liberal Party of Newfoundland and Labrador. The son of Mary and Michael Murray, he was born in Murray's Pond, Portugal Cove. Murray was educated at Saint Bonaventure's College and Memorial University College. He articled in the law offices of William R. Howley, was called to the Newfoundland bar in 1930 and set up practice in St. John's. He married Doreen Whitaker in 1941; the couple had two sons. Being a regional services centre heavily influences the district's economy.
