31st Berlin International Film Festival
The 31st annual Berlin International Film Festival was held from 13 to 24 February 1981. The Golden Bear was awarded to the Spanish film '' Deprisa, Deprisa'' directed by Carlos Saura. The retrospective was dedicated to British film producer Michael Balcon, as well a tribute to Turkish film director Yılmaz Güney who was a political prisoner at the time. The guest of the Homage was German film director Peter Pewas. West Berlin
West Berlin (german: Berlin (West) or , ) was a political enclave which comprised the western part of Berlin during the years of the Cold War. Although West Berlin was de jure not part of West Germany, lacked any sovereignty, and was under military occupation until German reunification in 1990, the territory was claimed by the West Germany, Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) which was heavily disputed by the Soviet Union and other Eastern Bloc countries. However, West Berlin de facto aligned itself politically with the FRG on 23 May 1949, was directly or indirectly represented in its federal institutions, and most of its residents were citizens of the FRG. ''Twenty Six Days from the Life of Dostoyevsky'' (russian: Двадцать шесть дней из жизни Достоевского, Dvadtsat shest dney iz zhizni Dostoevskogo) is a 1981 Soviet biographical film about writer Fyodor Dostoevsky directed by Aleksandr Zarkhi. It was entered into the 31st Berlin International Film Festival where Anatoly Solonitsyn won the Silver Bear for Best Actor. Plot The film is set in October 1866. Dostoyevski is experiencing a hard and dark period in his life, including his wife's funeral, then his brother's, debts and an unsettled personal life. He signs a leonine contract with the publisher Stellovsky which dictates that in a short time he needs to provide the manuscript of his new novel. Herbert Achternbusch
Herbert Achternbusch ( Schild; 23 November 1938 – 10 January 2022) was a German film director, writer and painter. He began as a writer of avant-garde prose, such as the novel ''Die Alexanderschlacht'', before turning to low-budget films. He had a love-hate relationship with Bavaria which showed itself in his work. Some of his controversial films, such as '' Das Gespenst'' (''The Ghost''), were presented at the Berlinale festival. Biography Born Herbert Schild in 1938 in Munich, Achternbusch was the illegitimate son of the sports teacher Luise Schild, née Muckenthaler, and the dental technician Adolf Achternbusch. He grew up in the Bavarian Forest with his grandmother. In 1960, he was adopted by his biological father and took the name Achternbusch. Kurt Gloor (8 November 1942 – 20 September 1997) was a Swiss film director, screenwriter and producer. He directed eleven films between 1967 and 1992. His 1976 film '' The Sudden Loneliness of Konrad Steiner'' was entered into the 26th Berlin International Film Festival. Five years later, his 1981 film ''The Inventor'' was entered into the 31st Berlin International Film Festival. Markus Imhoof (born 19 September 1941) is a Swiss film director, screenwriter, theatre and opera director. Biography He began his career as a documentary maker, focusing on controversial issues. His 1968 film ''Rondo'' was a critical look at the prison system in Switzerland. The film was banned until 1975. His next picture, ''Ormenis 199+69'' (1969) also met with censorship, as it examined the role and treatment of horses in the cavalry and suggested that the unit ought to be disbanded. Imhoof was forced to make some edits before the film could be screened in public, removing scenes that military veterans found objectionable. Only in 2002 did the film became available in uncensored form. ''Children's Island'' ( sv, Barnens ö) is a Swedish drama film which was released to cinemas in Sweden on 25 December 1980, directed by Kay Pollak, starring Thomas Fryk and Ingvar Hirdwall. It is based on the novel of the same name by P. C. Jersild. Filming took place between July and October 1979. It won Sweden's most prestigious film prize, the ''Guldbagge'', when it was released in 1980 and was Sweden's official selection for the 54th Academy Awards. The film became controversial in Australia, being banned in 2014, over thirty years after its original release. Plot The story is set in Stockholm where 11-year-old Reine is on the verge of puberty and afraid of sexual maturity.
