311 (band)
311 (pronounced "three eleven") is an American rock band from Omaha, Nebraska. The band was formed in 1988 by vocalist and guitarist Nick Hexum, lead guitarist Jim Watson, bassist Aaron "P-Nut" Wills, and drummer Chad Sexton. Watson was replaced by Tim Mahoney in 1990. In 1992, Doug "SA" Martinez joined to sing and provide turntables. 311 has released thirteen studio albums, two live albums, four compilation albums, four EPs and four DVDs. After a series of independent releases, 311 was signed to Capricorn Records in 1992 and released the albums ''Music'' (1993) and '' Grassroots'' (1994) to moderate success. They achieved greater success with their 1995 triple platinum self-titled album, which reached number 12 on the ''Billboard'' 200 on the strength of the singles " Down" and " All Mixed Up", the former of which topped the ''Billboard'' Hot Modern Rock Tracks in 1996. Streaking is the act of running, often naked, through a public area for publicity, as a prank, a dare, or a form of protest. Indecent exposure is the deliberate public exposure by a person of a portion of their body in a manner contrary to local standards of appropriate behavior. ''From Chaos'' is the sixth studio album by 311, released on June 19, 2001. In 2000, before this album was recorded and released they left Capricorn Records and switched to Volcano Entertainment as their permanent label. Singles from this album include "You Wouldn't Believe", "I'll Be Here Awhile", and "Amber". The latter was the most popular single from the album, and it still remains 311's most popular single to date. ''From Chaos'' is the first album to ever be recorded in 311's current recording studio The Hive in North Hollywood, California. ''From Chaos'' is an enhanced CD, featuring interviews with the band. Shortly after the album was mixed, lead singer Nick Hexum had his tonsils removed. "Bomb the Town," "Will the World," "We Do It Like This," and "Dreamland" are b-sides from this CD. ''Transistor'' is the fourth studio album by American rock band 311, released on August 5, 1997 by Capricorn Records. The album saw a change in musical style as fewer songs feature rapping in comparison to the band's previous albums. Upon its release, ''Transistor'' received negative reviews from critics, who felt it was overlong and self-indulgent. Retrospectively, however, the album has been more positively received, and was certified platinum by the RIAA. Music Clocking in at 67:59 and with twenty-one tracks (or twenty-three, counting both hidden tracks), ''Transistor'' is 311's longest album and, until their 2017 album ''Mosaic'', was their only album to contain more than sixteen tracks.
