29th Louisiana Infantry Regiment
The 29th Louisiana Infantry Regiment was a unit of volunteers recruited in Louisiana that fought in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. The regiment formed in May 1862 at Camp Moore by adding five independent companies to a battalion that Allen Thomas recruited for the state. The unit served during the war in the Western Theater of the American Civil War. Immediately after organizing, the regiment marched to Vicksburg, Mississippi. The regiment fought at Chickasaw Bayou in December 1862. It manned defenses on the left flank during the Siege of Vicksburg and was captured when the city fell. The soldiers marched to a parole camp, but later were dismissed on furlough and went home. In the summer of 1864, the men were ordered to report to a camp near Alexandria, Louisiana, but many of the soldiers stayed home. Pineville, Louisiana
Pineville is a city in Rapides Parish, Louisiana, United States. It is located across the Red River from the larger Alexandria. Pineville is hence part of the Alexandria Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 14,555 at the 2010 census. It had been 13,829 in 2000; population hence grew by 5 percent over the preceding decade. The Central Louisiana State Hospital, the Pinecrest Supports and Services Center, the Huey P. Vicksburg, Mississippi
Vicksburg is a historic city in Warren County, Mississippi, United States. It is the county seat, and the population at the 2010 census was 23,856. Located on a high bluff on the east bank of the Mississippi River across from Louisiana, Vicksburg was built by French colonists in 1719, and the outpost withstood an attack from the native Natchez people. Camp Moore
Camp Moore, north of the Village of Tangipahoa near Kentwood, Louisiana, was a Confederate training base and principal base of operations in eastern Louisiana and southwestern Mississippi. The base was named for Louisiana Governor Thomas Overton Moore. It operated from May 1861 to 1864 during the American Civil War. Confederate monuments were erected at the cemetery and on the grounds in the early 20th century. This location was chosen for development of the camp due to its relatively high ground elevation, abundance of fresh drinking water, and nearness to the then New Orleans, Jackson & Great Northern Railroad line. A small portion of the camp remains, containing the Camp Moore Confederate Cemetery and Museum. The state built the museum at the site in 1965, which displays and interprets area Confederate history.
