26th Filmfare Awards South
The 26th Filmfare Awards South ceremony honoring the winners of the best of South Indian cinema in 1978 was an event held on 10 June 1979 at Kalaivanar Arangam in Madras. The president of this year's function was the Major General S. P. Mahadevan, AVSM, General officer commanding, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala. The chief guest of the evening was Tamil Nadu Minister for Information and Hindu Endowments Mr. Thiru R. M. Veerappan. ''Vattathukkul Chaduram'' () is a 1978 Indian Tamil-language film, directed by S. P. Muthuraman and produced by N. S. Mani. Based on the novel written by Maharishi, the film stars Latha, Sumithra, Srikanth and Sarath Babu. It depicts the depth of friendship shared between the characters Anu and Malathy. The film was released on 29 July 1978, and Latha won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress – Tamil. Plot Anu falls in love with Karthik, the brother of her best friend Malathy from childhood. Latha (actress)
Latha, also known as M.G.R. Latha or Latha Sethupathi, (born 7 June 1953) is an Indian actress, who played leading roles in South Indian films from 1973 to 1983. She is also known for her roles in various serials in Tamil language. Early life Her photogenic looks and dancing skills attracted attention from the Tamil film industry. She entered films when she was fifteen and was encouraged by her aunt, actress Kamala Kotnis. Her first film was ''Ulagam Sutrum Valiban'' (1973), whose star and producer was M. G. Ramachandran. She is from the Sethupathy clan, the Royal family of Ramnad, and her father was Shanmugha Rajeswara Sethupathi and her mother is Leelarani, originally from Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh, so Latha was fluent in Tamil and Telugu from an early age. ''Sigappu Rojakkal'' () is a 1978 Indian Tamil-language psychological thriller film co-written and directed by Bharathirajaa. The film starring Kamal Haasan and Sridevi, with Goundamani, Bhagyaraj and Vadivukkarasi in supporting roles. It revolves around Dileep, who is traumatised by women's behaviour in his childhood, and grows up to be a psychopath who kills women after having sex with them. ''Sigappu Rojakkal'' was inspired by serial killer Raman Raghav's crimes, and another serial killer who was based in Bombay but hailed from Tirunelveli. It was deliberately meant to be different from Bharathiraja's earlier ventures which were set in villages. The dialogues were written by Bhagyaraj, cinematography was handled by P. S. Nivas, and the music was composed by Ilaiyaraaja. Kamal plays an anti-hero in this film. Bharathiraja
Bharathiraja (born 17 July 1941) is an Indian film director and actor who works mainly in the Tamil film industry. Making his debut in 1977 with ''16 Vayathinile'', he is known for realistic and sensitive portrayals of rural life in his films. As of 2017, he has won six National Film Awards, four Filmfare Awards South, two Tamil Nadu State Film Awards and a Nandi Awards, Nandi Award. He has also directed films in Telugu language, Telugu and Hindi language, Hindi. The Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri award, India's fourth-highest civilian honour, in 2004 for his contribution to the film industry. In 2005, he was conferred with the Doctor of Letters (honorary degree) from Sathyabama University. ''Mullum Malarum'' (; ) is a 1978 Indian Tamil-language drama film written and directed by Mahendran. Produced by Venu Chettiar and V. Mohan, the film stars Rajinikanth, Sarath Babu, Jayalaxmi and Shoba. It marks Mahendran's directorial debut and is partly based on Uma Chandran's novel of the same name, which was serialised in the Tamil magazine ''Kalki'' in 1966. ''Mullum Malarum'' tells the story of Kali (Rajinikanth), a winch operator of a cable trolley who dotes on his sister Valli (Shoba) since they were orphaned, and clashes with his boss Kumaran (Sarath Babu).
