2023 Chicago Elections
The 2023 Chicago elections took place in two rounds on February 28, 2023, and April 4, 2023. Elections were held for Mayor of Chicago, City Clerk of Chicago, City Treasurer of Chicago, all 50 members of the Chicago City Council, and 66 members of the newly-created police District Councils. The elections were administered by the Chicago Board of Elections. Mayor Incumbent Mayor Lori Lightfoot ran for re-election, and faced eight challengers: Kam Buckner (member of Illinois House of Representatives), Willie Wilson (businessman and perennial candidate), Roderick Sawyer (member of the Chicago City Council), Sophia King (member of the Chicago City Council), Ja'Mal Green (community activist), Paul Vallas (former CEO of Chicago Public Schools), Brandon Johnson (member of the Cook County Board of Commissioners), and Jesus "Chuy" García (U.S. Representative from Illinois's 4th congressional district). Mayor Of Chicago
The mayor of Chicago is the chief executive of city government in Chicago, Illinois, the third-largest city in the United States. The mayor is responsible for the administration and management of various city departments, submits proposals and recommendations to the Chicago City Council, is active in the enforcement of the city's ordinances, submits the city's annual budget and appoints city officers, department commissioners or directors, and members of city boards and commissions. During sessions of the city council, the mayor serves as the presiding officer. Illinois' 4th Congressional District
The 4th congressional district of Illinois includes part of Cook County, and has been represented by Democrat Jesús "Chuy" García since January 2019. In November 2017, incumbent Luis Gutiérrez announced that he would retire from Congress at the end of his current term, and not seek re-election in 2018. Jesús "Chuy" García was elected on November 6, 2018. It was featured by ''The Economist'' as one of the most strangely drawn and gerrymandered congressional districts in the country, inspired the " Ugly Gerry" gerrymandering typeface, and has been nicknamed "earmuffs" due to its shape. It was created after federal courts ordered the creation of a majority-Hispanic district in the Chicago area. Stacy Davis Gates (born December 25, 1976) is an American labor leader and educator. She is president of the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU). In May 2022, she was elected president of the union after previously serving as vice president under Jesse Sharkey. Early life Davis Gates grew up in South Bend, Indiana in a middle class household. John Catanzara
John Catanzara is an American police union leader, and former member of the Chicago Police Department. Since May 2020, Catanzara has been president of Lodge 7 of the Fraternal Order of Police. He joined the Chicago Police Department in 1995 and was placed on administrative leave after filing a report against former Police Superintendent Eddie T. Johnson.
