June 2022 South Korean By-elections
The June 2022 South Korean by-elections for seven constituencies of the National Assembly were held in South Korea simultaneously with local elections on June 1, 2022. Lee Jae-myung of the Democratic Party and Ahn Cheol-soo of the People Power Party, former candidates in the 2022 South Korean presidential election, ran successfully in the by-election for one of the constituencies. June Struggle
The June Democratic Struggle (), also known as the June Democracy Movement and June Democratic Uprising, was a nationwide pro-democracy movement in South Korea that generated mass protests from June 10 to June 29, 1987. The demonstrations forced the ruling government to hold elections and institute other democratic reforms, which led to the establishment of the Sixth Republic, the present-day government of South Korea. On June 10, the military regime of President Chun Doo-hwan announced its choice of Roh Tae-woo as the next president. The public designation of Chun's successor was seen as a final affront to a delayed and deferred process to revise the South Korean constitution to permit direct election of the President. Presidential elections in South Korea determine who will serve as the President of South Korea for the next five years (formerly four, six, and seven). 2022 South Korean Presidential Election
Presidential elections were held in South Korea on 9 March 2022. Under the South Korean constitution, presidents are restricted to a single five-year term, meaning that incumbent president Moon Jae-in was ineligible to run for a second term. Opposition candidate Yoon Suk-yeol of the People Power Party won the election, defeating candidate Lee Jae-myung of the incumbent Democratic Party. Both main parties had unusually intense primary elections. Upon its nomination of Lee Jae-myung, the second-place Democratic Party candidate Lee Nak-yon called for an appeal of the results, until being forced to concede.
