2022 World Para Swimming Championships
The 2022 World Para Swimming Championships was the 11th edition of the World Para Swimming Championships, an international swimming competition for athletes with a disability. It was held in Madeira from 12 to 18 June. The competition was originally scheduled to be held in 2021, however, it was moved to the summer of 2022 due to the postponement of the Paralympic Games in Tokyo from 2020 to 2021. The event featured 488 athletes from 59 countries. Participating nations Russia and Belarus were banned from attending all international competitions due to the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. Paige Leonhardt
Paige Leonhardt (born 21 September 2000) is an Australian swimmer. She represented Australia at the 2016 Rio Paralympics and the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics, where she won a silver medal. Personal life Leonhardt was born on 21 September 2000. At the age of five she was involved in a car accident that left her with severe injuries. She spent four years recovering. The accident left her with hemiplegia cerebral palsy on her right side as well as intercranial hypertension, epilepsy and autism. The intercranial hypertension means that she regularly needs to have excess fluid on the brain removed via a spinal tap. The calcium build-up behind her eyes causes drusen which will one day lead to a loss of eyesight. She now lives in Mount Cotton, Queensland, previously lived in Port Macquarie which is also the home of wheelchair rugby gold medallist Ryley Batt who is her idol. Madeleine "Maddie" McTernan (born 29 December 2000) is an Australian Paralympic swimmer. She represented Australia at the 2020 Summer Paralympics where she won a silver medal. Personal life McTernan was born on 29 December 2000 in Nambour Queensland. She has an intellectual disability. She grew up in Coffs Harbour where in primary school, she attended St Francis Xavier School in Woolgoolga, New South Wales. In 2016 she moved to the Gold Coast where in high school she went to Aquinas College, Southport. Swimming career McTernan is S14 swimmer. Ruby Storm (born 18 November 2003) is an Australian Paralympic swimmer with an intellectual disability. She represented Australia at the 2019 World Para Swimming Championships, winning a bronze medal, and at the 2020 Summer Paralympics, 2020 Tokyo Paralympics, she won a silver and bronze medal.
