The 2022 Supercopa de España Final decided the winner of the 2021–22 Supercopa de España, the 38th edition of the annual Spanish football super cup competition. The match was played on 16 January 2022 at the King Fahd International Stadium in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The match was a clásico between 2020–21 Copa del Rey runners-up Athletic Bilbao and 2020–21 La Liga runners-up Real Madrid, the first time the clubs had met to directly compete for a trophy since the 1958 Copa del Generalísimo Final. 2021–22 Supercopa De España
The 2021–22 Supercopa de España was the 38th edition of the Supercopa de España, an annual football competition for clubs in the Spanish football league system that were successful in its major competitions in the preceding season. After last season's edition was held in Spain due to travel restrictions related the COVID-19 pandemic, this year the tournament returned to Saudi Arabia as per the deal with the Royal Spanish Football Federation. Real Madrid won the tournament for their twelfth Supercopa de España title. Qualification The tournament featured the winners and runners-up of the 2020–21 Copa del Rey and 2020–21 La Liga. The Supercopa de España or the ''Spanish Super Cup'' is a super cup tournament in Spanish football. Founded in 1982 as a two-team competition, the current version has been contested since 2019–20 by four teams: the winners and runners-up of the Copa del Rey and La Liga. Real Madrid are the most recent winners. History The current competition has existed since 1982. Between 1940 and 1953, several other tournaments between the Spanish league champions and the cup winners (then ''Copa del Generalísimo'') were played. In September 1940, a match with this format had the name of Copa de Campeones. The 2020–21 Supercopa de España was the 37th edition of the Supercopa de España, an annual football competition for clubs in the Spanish football league system that were successful in its major competitions in the preceding season. It was the second straight edition played under the new format with four teams. They included 2019–20 Copa del Rey winners Real Sociedad and 2019–20 La Liga winners Real Madrid, 2019–20 Copa del Rey runners-up Athletic Bilbao and 2019–20 La Liga runners-up Barcelona. The competition was initially supposed to be held in Saudi Arabia like the previous year, but restrictions related to the global COVID-19 pandemic forced it to remain in Spain. The semi-finals took place in the cities of Córdoba and Málaga, on 13 and 14 January 2021. The final was played at Estadio de La Cartuja in Seville on 17 January 2021. The 2015 Supercopa de España was a two-legged football match-up that was played in August 2015 between Athletic Bilbao, runners-up of the 2014–15 Copa del Rey, and Barcelona, the champions of 2014–15 La Liga and the 2014–15 Copa del Rey, making it a rematch of the 2015 Copa del Rey Final. Athletic Bilbao won the trophy 5–1 on aggregate for their first honour in 31 years. Aritz Aduriz scored a hat-trick for Athletic Bilbao in the first leg in a 4–0 win on 14 August.
