2021 Nicaraguan General Election
General elections were held in Nicaragua on 7 November 2021 to elect the President, the National Assembly and members of the Central American Parliament. President Daniel Ortega of the Sandinista National Liberation Front sought re-election, while five opposition candidates appeared on the ballot. In early June, police arrested five other potential opposition candidates: Cristiana Chamorro Barrios, Arturo Cruz Jr., Félix Maradiaga, Juan Sebastián Chamorro and Miguel Mora. In July, candidates Medardo Mairena and were arrested, while Luis Fley and went into exile due to threats of arrest. Critics stated that these arrests were intended to prevent the opposition candidates from running against Ortega. The deadline for candidates to register was 2 August 2021, and on 3 August, vice-presidential candidate Berenice Quezada was placed under house arrest and disqualified from running. Supreme Electoral Council (Nicaragua)
The Supreme Electoral Council ( es, Consejo Supremo Electoral, CSE) is the public body responsible for organizing elections in Nicaragua. Roberto Rivas Reyes has been president of the CSE since July 2000, though as of January 2018, vice-president Lumberto Campbell functioned as acting head of the organization. Campbell was named to the Council by the National Assembly in 2014. Previous presidents of the CSE include Mariano Fiallos Oyanguren (1984 to 1996) and Rosa Marina Zelaya (beginning in the 1990s). Juan Sebastián Chamorro
Juan Sebastián Chamorro García (born 1971) is a Nicaraguan economist, businessman and politician. He was a pre-candidate for president in the 2021 Nicaraguan general election until he was detained in a wave of arrests of opposition candidates and other civic leaders. Early life and education Chamorro was born in 1971 to Sonia García and journalist Xavier Chamorro Cardenal who founded the newspaper ''El Nuevo Diario'' in 1980, part of the fallout from the assassination of his brother Pedro Joaquín Chamorro Cardenal in 1978, an event broadly seen as a turning point in boosting support for the Sandinista Revolution and its success in overthrowing the Somoza dictatorship the next year. First-past-the-post Voting
In a first-past-the-post electoral system (FPTP or FPP), formally called single-member plurality voting (SMP) when used in single-member districts or informally choose-one voting in contrast to ranked voting, or score voting, voters cast their vote for a candidate of their choice, and the candidate who receives the most votes wins even if the top candidate gets less than 50%, which can happen when there are more than two popular candidates. As a winner-take-all method, FPTP often produces disproportional results (when electing members of an assembly, such as a parliament) in the sense that political parties do not get representation according to their share of the popular vote. This usually favours the largest party and parties with strong regional support to the detriment of smaller parties without a geographically concentrated base. The Constitutionalist Liberal Party ( es, Partido Liberal Constitucionalista, PLC) is a political party in Nicaragua. At the Nicaraguan general election of 5 November 2006, the party won 25 of 92 seats in the National Assembly. However, the party suffered a devastating loss in the 2011 general election, losing 23 seats in the National Assembly. Berenice Xuyami Quezada Herrera (born 28 September 1993) is a Nicaraguan model and beauty pageant titleholder who was crowned Miss Nicaragua 2017 and represented Nicaragua at the Miss Universe 2017 pageant.
