The 2020 St. Louis Cardinals season was the List of St. Louis Cardinals seasons, 139th for the St. Louis Cardinals of the Major League Baseball (MLB), a Professional sports league organization, franchise in St. Louis, Missouri. It was the 129th season for the Cardinals in the National League (NL), and their 15th at Busch Stadium, Busch Stadium III. They entered the season as defending NL Central champions. On March 12, 2020, MLB announced that because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the start of the regular season would be delayed by at least two weeks in addition to the remainder of spring training being cancelled. Four days later, it was announced that the start of the season would be pushed back indefinitely due to the recommendation made by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, CDC to restrict events of more than 50 people for eight weeks. National League Central
The National League Central is one of Major League Baseball's six divisions. This division was created in 1994, by moving two teams from the National League West (the Cincinnati Reds and the Houston Astros) and three teams from the National League East (the Chicago Cubs, the Pittsburgh Pirates, and the St. Louis Cardinals). When the division was created in 1994, the Pirates were originally supposed to stay in the East while the Atlanta Braves were to be moved to the Central from the West. However, the Braves, wanting to form a natural rivalry with the expansion Florida Marlins, requested to remain in the East. Despite the Marlins offering to go to the Central, the Pirates instead gave up their spot in the East to the Braves. Since then, the Pirates have tried several times unsuccessfully to be placed back in the East.
