2020 San Antonio FC Season
The 2020 San Antonio FC season was the club's fifth season of existence. Including the San Antonio Thunder of the original NASL and the former San Antonio Scorpions of the modern NASL, it was the 11th season of professional soccer in San Antonio. The club played in the USL Championship, the second division of the United States soccer league system, and were scheduled to participate in the U.S. Open Cup before it was postponed and ultimately cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This was the first season without Darren Powell as head coach. Former assistant coach Alen Marcina was named head coach on December 9, 2019. San Antonio FC
San Antonio FC is a professional soccer club based in San Antonio, Texas. It competes in the USL Championship, the second-highest level of the United States soccer league system, as a member of the Western Conference. History San Antonio FC was awarded the thirty-first USL franchise on January 7, 2016. The establishment of the club, along with the concurrent purchase of Toyota Field by the City of San Antonio and Bexar County, was part of a plan by local officials to obtain an expansion franchise in Major League Soccer. As a result, the San Antonio Scorpions franchise of the North American Soccer League was shut down. Matt Cardone
Matt Cardone (born June 18, 1993) is an American former soccer player who played for San Antonio FC in the USL Championship. Early life and education Cardone was born in San Antonio, Texas. He played college soccer at Trinity University between 2011 and 2014, where he was twice named All-America. Professional career After a trial with Major League Soccer's Orlando City SC, Cardone signed with North American Soccer League side San Antonio Scorpions on April 17, 2015. The club ceased operations in December 2015. Then on February 4, 2016 Cardone was signed by the United Soccer League's newest franchise, San Antonio FC. STAR Soccer Complex
The South Texas Area Regional Soccer Complex is a 13 field soccer venue in San Antonio, Texas, United States. It is used primarily for youth club soccer and adult league soccer. It is located in the former Longhorn Quarry, adjacent to Toyota Field, and Morgan's Wonderland, and near Heroes Stadium. Toyota Field was originally owned and operated by S.O.A.R. Inc., a non-profit organization founded by Gordon Hartman. The complex was affiliated with the San Antonio Scorpions of the North American Soccer League, also owned by Hartman. Ryan Roushandel
Ryan Massoud Roushandel (born November 11, 1985) is an American soccer player and coach. Youth career Roushandel started his collegiate career at Clemson University, going all the way to the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament as a redshirt freshman. After two years at Clemson, Roushandel opted to use his final three years of eligibility at the University of Central Florida. Club career After stints in Costa Rica with Brujas FC and Puerto Rico with Sevilla FC Puerto Rico, Roushandel returned to the US, where he coached with UCF Knights and Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels. The United States soccer league system is a series of professional and amateur soccer leagues based, in whole or in part, in the United States. Sometimes called the American soccer pyramid, teams and leagues are not linked by the system of promotion and relegation typical in soccer elsewhere. USL Championship
The USL Championship (USLC) is a professional men's soccer league in the United States that began its inaugural season in 2011. The USL is sanctioned by the United States Soccer Federation (U.S. Soccer) as a Division II league since 2017, placing it under Major League Soccer (Division I) in the hierarchy. North American Soccer League (2011–2017)
The North American Soccer League (NASL) was a professional men's soccer league based in the United States. The league was named for, but had no connection to, the original North American Soccer League. The later NASL was founded in 2009, and began play in 2011 with eight teams. San Antonio Scorpions
The San Antonio Scorpions were an American professional soccer team based in San Antonio, Texas. Founded in 2010, the team made its debut in the North American Soccer League in 2012. The Scorpions played at Toyota Field, a soccer specific stadium that was completed in 2013. The club operated differently from most professional sports clubs in terms of its operating profit.
