The 2020 Niue National Awards were the first awards made under the Niue National Awards system to recognise achievement and service by Niueans. They were announced in October 2022. The recipients of honours are displayed here as they were styled before their new honour. Niue National Awards
The Niue National Awards is a system of orders, decorations and medals to recognise the achievements of, or service by, Niueans. It was established in 2020. Previously Niue had fallen under the New Zealand royal honours system. The awards are decided by the National Awards Committee and announced each year on Constitution Day, 19 October. There are three levels of awards: * The Niue Distinguished Service Cross (NDSC) for distinguished service, for those who have "contributed many years of outstanding service to the people and nation of Niue"; * The Niue Public Service Medal (NPSM) for those who have contributed significantly as members of the Niue Public Service; and * The Niue Community Service Star (NCSS) for community service. Niue
Niue (, ; niu, Niuē) is an island country in the South Pacific Ocean, northeast of New Zealand. Niue's land area is about and its population, predominantly Polynesian, was about 1,600 in 2016. Niue is located in a triangle between Tonga, Samoa, and the Cook Islands. It is 604 kilometres northeast of Tonga. The island is commonly referred to as "The Rock", which comes from the traditional name "Rock of Polynesia". Niue is one of the world's largest coral islands. The terrain of the island has two noticeable levels. The higher level is made up of a limestone cliff running along the coast, with a plateau in the centre of the island reaching approximately 60 metres (200 feet) above sea level. Young Vivian
Mititaiagimene Young Vivian is a Niuean politician and diplomat, who served as Premier of Niue twice, the first time from December 1992 to March 1993 following the death of Sir Robert Rex, and the second from 2002 to 2008. He also served as a Cabinet Minister multiple times, first as Minister of Education, Economic Development and Agriculture and later as Minister of Finance under Robert Rex, and in the Cabinet of Sani Lakatani. From 1979 to 1982 he served as Secretary-General of the South Pacific Commission. Early political career Before entering politics Vivian worked as a teacher. Narita Viliamu Tahega
Narita Viliamu Tahega (née Narita Janne Freda Tuga Viliamu; born 4 July 1989) is a Niuean weightlifter. From 2003 to 2011, Viliamu Tahega won 38 medals in the 75kg+ weight class across 13 international weightlifting competitions, giving her the recognition of having won the most medals of any Niuean athlete in international competition. Events Viliamu Tahega competed in include the Commonwealth Games, Pacific Games, Pacific Mini Games, and Oceania & South Pacific weightlifting championship. Her total medal record consists of 14 gold, 23 silver, and 1 bronze medal. After her retirement from competitive weightlifting, Viliamu Tahega also served as an official in the Oceania Talent Identification Programme which, with the support of the International Weightlifting Federation, trains thousands of young weightlifters and selects top athletes to attend a training camp at the Oceania Weightlifting Institute.
