2019 Ontario Tankard
The 2019 Ontario Men's Curling Championship, better known as the Tankard, the 2019 provincial men's curling championship for Southern Ontario, was held from January 27 to February 3 at the Woolwich Memorial Centre in Elmira, Ontario. The winning Scott McDonald team would represent Ontario at the 2019 Tim Hortons Brier in Brandon, Manitoba. The event is being held in conjunction with the 2019 Ontario Scotties Tournament of Hearts, the provincial women's curling championship. Unlike the 2018 event, the 2019 Tankard returned to having a round-robin format. Qualification Process The original qualification process called for 10 teams to qualify from three cash spiels (two each), an open qualifier (two teams), plus the top two southern Ontario teams in the CTRS standings (as of December 9, 2018). Elmira, Ontario
Elmira is the largest community in the township of Woolwich, Ontario, Canada. It is north of the city of Waterloo near the Regional Municipality of Waterloo's northern border with Wellington County. The community was listed in the 2016 Canadian census as having a population of 10,161. 2019 Ontario Scotties Tournament Of Hearts
The 2019 Ontario Scotties Tournament of Hearts, the provincial women's curling championship for Southern Ontario, was held January 28 to February 2 at the Woolwich Memorial Centre in Elmira, Ontario. The winning team of skip Rachel Homan, third Emma Miskew, second Joanne Courtney and lead Lisa Weagle represented Ontario at the 2019 Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Sydney, Nova Scotia, finishing second. Homan defeated Julie Tippin in the final with a final score of 7-5. The event was held in conjunction with the 2019 Ontario Tankard, the men's provincial championship. This was the sixth time the team played at the Scotties and the fourth time representing Ontario. Unlike the 2018 event, the 2019 Scotties returned to having a round robin format. Royal Canadian Curling Club
The Royal Canadian Curling Club is a curling club located in the Riverdale neighbourhood of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The clubhouse on Broadview Avenue was originally built in 1907 by the ''Royal Canadian Bicycle Club'', while the ice arena was added in 1929. In addition to cycling activities, the club had featured skating, baseball, ice hockey, curling, and ten-pin bowling, until 1953, when the club decided to focus exclusively on curling activities. Known to its members as ''The Royals'', the club hosts house league draws on evenings from Sunday to Friday as well as Tuesday afternoons. Chris Gardner (curler)
Christopher James Gardner (born March 25, 1985 in Ottawa) is a Canadian curler who competes mainly in Ontario. Career Gardner skipped his bantam mixed team to a provincial championship in 2002, and the following year he won the provincial junior mixed title. Gardner's men's team, which he skips, has had some success on the provincial curling tour circuit. In 2009, they made their first provincial championship, finishing with a 3-6 record. He played in his second provincial championship in 2010, finishing in last with a 1-9 record. In April 2010, Gardner won the 2011 provincial mixed championship as skip, earning him the right to play in the 2011 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship with Erin Morrissey at third, Brad Kidd at second and Kim Brown at lead. Pat Ferris
Patrick "Pat" Ferris (born October 28, 1975 in North York, Ontario) is a Canadian curler from Grimsby, Ontario. He currently skips his own team. Career Ferris had a successful junior career. In 1993, he skipped his Sutton District High School team to a provincial schoolboy championship. He won back to back provincial junior titles in 1995 and 1996. This qualified Ferris to skip the Ontario team at the Canadian Junior Curling Championships in both of those years. Dayna Deruelle
Dayna Deruelle (born June 17, 1982) is a Canadian curler from Brampton, Ontario. He currently skips a rink on the World Curling Tour. His team competes in various events on the Ontario Curling Tour throughout the season and competes annually in the Ontario Curling Association Dominion Tankard play downs. Deruelle and his teammates Andrew McGaugh, Kevin Lagerquist and Evan DeViller enjoyed some success in their first season as a team when they qualified to represent Region 3 in the 2012 Ontario Dominion Tankard in Stratford, Ontario. Furthermore, the team qualified for the playoffs after finishing 5-5 in the round robin and winning a tie-breaker. Mark Bice
Mark Bice (born October 10, 1984 in Sarnia, Ontario) is a Canadian curler. He used to skip a team on the World Curling Tour. Career Bice had a fairly successful junior career. Bice is a two time provincial junior champion, winning in 2003 and 2005 and was a provincial schoolboy champion in 2002. In 2003, his rink of Mike Callan, Rob Pruliere and Jeff Wilson finished with a 7-5 record at the Canadian Junior Curling Championships- out of the playoffs. In 2005, they went to the Canadian Juniors again, this time with Codey Maus replacing Callan. The team finished second after the round robin with a 9-3 record. After defeating Ian Fitzner-LeBlanc's Nova Scotia rink in the semi-final, Bice lost in the final match, against Saskatchewan's Kyle George. Greg Balsdon
Gregory Balsdon (born October 9, 1977) is a Canadian curler from North York, Ontario. He currently skips a team on the World Curling Tour. Curling career Balsdon was born in Toronto, Ontario. In 1995, Balsdon won the Ontario Schoolboy championship for his Don Mills Collegiate Institute team. In 1996, he won the provincial junior mixed title. Balsdon skips one of the top teams in Ontario. As of 2019, Balsdon has played in 13 provincial championships. He first played at the provincials in 1999, playing for John Base (4th place). He left the Base rink in 2000 to form his own team. He qualified again in 2002 as a skip, again finishing 4th. His next provincial was the 2005 Ontario Kia Cup, where his rink finished 4th once again. Charley Thomas
Charley M. Thomas (born April 4, 1986 in Victoria, British Columbia) is a Canadian curler from Calgary who currently skips his own rink on the World Curling Tour. Curling career Thomas started his career with an Alberta Provincial Junior title in 2004 and made his debut on the national and international curling scene representing Alberta and winning the 2006 Canadian Junior Curling Championships (Thunder Bay, Ontario) and 2006 World Junior Curling Championships (Jeonju, Korea). Thomas and team also qualified for the 2007 Canadian Junior Curling Championships by winning the 2007 Alberta Junior Provincials at the Granite Curling Club in Edmonton, Alberta. Glenn Howard
Glenn William Howard (born July 17, 1962) is a Canadian curler who is one of the most decorated curlers of all time. He has won four world championships, four Briers and 17 Ontario provincial championships, including a record eight straight, from 2006 to 2013. Through 2017, he has played in 218 games at the Brier, more than any other curler in history. He has also won the 2001 TSN Skins Game. Career Juniors Howard lost two straight Ontario Junior Championship finals in 1980 and 1981, skipping a rink out of Midland, Ontario.
