2019 California Golden Bears Football Team
The 2019 California Golden Bears football team represented the University of California, Berkeley in the 2019 NCAA Division I FBS football season. They competed as members of the North Division of the Pac-12 Conference. In their third year under head coach Justin Wilcox, the Bears improved to an 8–5 record for only the second time since 2009, finishing 2nd in the Pac-12 North. The Bears started off the season strong, achieving a No. 15 AP ranking (their highest since 2009) after a 4–0 start, including a 20–19 upset win against No. 14 ranked Washington. However, after injury to quarterback Chase Garbers during the Arizona State game, the Bears proceeded to lose the next four games. With the return of Garbers, Cal notably defeated Stanford in the Big Game for the first time since 2009. Justin Wilcox (American Football)
Justin Draper Wilcox (born November 12, 1976) is an American football coach and former player. Since 2017, he has been the head football coach of the California Golden Bears. Early years Born in Eugene, Oregon, Wilcox grew up as the younger of two sons on a family farm (wheat and cherries) in nearby Junction City. He played quarterback at Junction City High School and led the team to the 3A state title as a junior in 1993. He graduated in 1995 and considered Stanford and Arizona but followed family tradition and accepted a scholarship to Oregon under head coach Mike Bellotti. Playing career After redshirting his first year at Oregon, Wilcox found himself buried on the depth chart and switched to defensive back. Gerald A. Azzinaro Jr. (; born July 11, 1958) is an American football coach who most recently served as the defensive coordinator for the UCLA Bruins football team. He played college football as a linebacker at American International College (AIC) and became a graduate assistant for the team in 1982. He was the linebackers and running backs coach for Westfield State in 1985, and he was the head coach for Western New England University in 1986. He was the defensive coordinator for AIC from 1987 to 1991, before becoming the linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator for Massachusetts in 1992. Scott Andrew Frost (born January 4, 1975) is a former American football coach and player. He was the head football coach at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln from 2018 to 2022. Born in Lincoln, Nebraska, Frost played college football as a quarterback for the Stanford Cardinal and the Nebraska Cornhuskers, the latter of which he led to a shared national championship in 1997. He played six years in the NFL, mostly on special teams. The 2018 Cheez-It Bowl was a college football bowl game played on December 26, 2018 at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona. It was one of the 2018–19 bowl games concluding the 2018 FBS football season. It was the 30th edition of a bowl game that has gone by various names, and was called the Cactus Bowl for its previous four playings. The bowl was sponsored by Cheez-It crackers.
