2019 Bloc Québécois Leadership Election
The 2019 Bloc Québécois leadership election was initiated by the resignation of party leader Martine Ouellet in June 2018. While originally scheduled to be held on February 24, 2019 on a one member, one vote basis, Yves-François Blanchet, as the only candidate in the race following the nomination deadline of January 15, 2019, was officially acclaimed Leader of the Bloc Québécois on January 17, 2019. Background Ouellet got 32% support from a confidence vote of party members. She resigned on June 11, 2018. Seven out of ten Bloc Québécois caucus members left on February 28, 2018 and formed Québec debout, which was announced on May 9, 2018. On September 17, 2018, the party's five MPs rejoined the Bloc Québécois caucus. 2017 Bloc Québécois Leadership Election
The 2017 Bloc Québécois leadership election was held on March 14, 2017 to choose a successor to Gilles Duceppe, who resigned on October 22, 2015 after the 2015 Canadian federal election. Rhéal Fortin, MP for Rivière-du-Nord (electoral district), Rivière-du-Nord, had been serving as Interim leader (Canada), interim leader since Duceppe's resignation. The election was initially scheduled for April 22, 2017 but ended on March 14, 2017 at the end of the nomination period, because there was only one candidate. Ouellet's tenure was controversial due to her staunch Quebec separatism, separatist views, and, following a leadership vote, she was forced to resign in June 2018. In Canada, the dean of the House (french: doyen de la Chambre) is the sitting Member of the House of Commons with the longest unbroken record of service. The dean is responsible for presiding over the election of the Speaker of the House of Commons at the beginning of each Parliament. Xavier Barsalou-Duval (born November 10, 1988) is a Canadian politician who was elected to represent the riding of Pierre-Boucher—Les Patriotes—Verchères in the House of Commons in the 2015 federal election. Nicolet-Yamaska is a former provincial electoral district in the Centre-du-Québec and Montérégie regions of Quebec, Canada that elected members to the National Assembly of Quebec. Jean-Martin Aussant () is a Canadian economist, musician, and politician, now serving as Executive director of the Chantier de l' économie sociale. He represented Nicolet-Yamaska in the National Assembly of Quebec from 2008 to 2012, first as a member of the Parti Québécois and then as leader of his own party, Option nationale. He was defeated when he ran for re-election in Nicolet-Bécancour in the 2012 general election. He later rejoined the Parti Québécois to run unsuccessfully in the 2018 Quebec election.
