2018–19 Calgary Flames Season
The 2018–19 Calgary Flames season was the Flames' 39th season in Calgary, and the 47th for the National Hockey League franchise that was established on June 6, 1972. The Flames clinched a playoff spot on March 17, 2019, when the Minnesota Wild lost to the New York Islanders. On March 31, the team won its first division title since the 2005–06 season, and clinched the best record in what is now the Western Conference for the first time since the 1989–90 season. They also finished with 50 wins and 107 points, in both cases trailing only the 1989 Stanley Cup champions. The Flames faced the Colorado Avalanche in the first round, losing in five games. Pacific Division (NHL)
The National Hockey League's Pacific Division was formed in 1993 as part of the Western Conference in a league realignment. It is also one of the two successors of the Smythe Division (the other one was the Northwest Division), though of the current teams, only the Anaheim Ducks, Seattle Kraken and Vegas Golden Knights did not play in the Smythe Division. Due to subsequent realignments, three of the Pacific Division's original teams (the Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers, and Vancouver Canucks) left the division in 1998 but returned in 2013. The division is the only one in the NHL without any Original Six teams. Shenzhen Universiade Sports Centre
Shenzhen Universiade Sports Centre (), also known as Shenzhen Universiade Centre, Longgang Universiade Sports Centre, or Longgang Stadium, is a multi-use sport facilities complex in Longgang District, Shenzhen, Longgang, Shenzhen, Guangdong, China. The sports centre was completed in 2011. It is used mostly for association football and sport of athletics, athletics competitions, and hosted some events at the 2011 Summer Universiade. Jeff Glass
Jeff Glass (born November 19, 1985) is a Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender who is currently playing for the San Diego Gulls of the American Hockey League (AHL). Glass was selected by the Ottawa Senators in the 3rd round (89th overall) of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. He joined their minor league affiliate and played several years with the organization before leaving as a free agent to join Barys Astana in 2009. He made his long-awaited NHL debut in the 2017–18 season with the Chicago Blackhawks. Mike Smith (born March 22, 1982) is a Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender for the Edmonton Oilers of the National Hockey League (NHL). Smith has previously played for the Dallas Stars, Tampa Bay Lightning, Phoenix/Arizona Coyotes, and the Calgary Flames. Smith is the 11th goaltender in NHL history to score a goal, which he did in the 2013–14 season against the Detroit Red Wings. Jonathan Bruce Gillies (born January 22, 1994) is an American professional ice hockey goaltender for the Tucson Roadrunners in the American Hockey League (AHL) while under contract to the Arizona Coyotes of the National Hockey League (NHL). Playing career As a youth, Gillies played in the 2007 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with the Middlesex Islanders minor ice hockey team, along with teammates Matt Grzelcyk and Miles Wood. The 2018–19 Colorado Avalanche season was the 24th operational season and 23rd playing season since the franchise relocated from Quebec prior to the start of the 1995–96 NHL season. As well as the franchise's 40th season in the National Hockey League and 47th season overall. On April 4, 2019, the Avalanche clinched a playoff spot after a 3–2 overtime win against the Winnipeg Jets. In the playoffs, the Avalanche defeated the Calgary Flames 4–1 in the First Round to secure their first playoff series win since 2008. 1988–89 Calgary Flames Season
The 1988–89 Calgary Flames season was the ninth season for the Calgary Flames and 17th for the Flames franchise in the National Hockey League (NHL). They won their second consecutive Presidents' Trophy as the NHL's top regular season club and went on to win the first Stanley Cup championship in franchise history, defeating the Montreal Canadiens in the 1989 Stanley Cup Final. Al MacInnis won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player of the playoffs. The regular season saw the debut of Theoren Fleury, who went on to become the Flames' all-time leading scorer, and Sergei Pryakhin, who became the first Soviet player allowed to play in the NHL. 1989–90 Calgary Flames Season
The 1989–90 Calgary Flames season was the Flames eighteenth season, and their tenth in Calgary. In defense of their first Stanley Cup championship, despite losing Lanny McDonald to retirement the Flames remained a dominant team on the ice, finishing atop the Smythe Division and the Campbell Conference for the third consecutive year, and 2nd overall in the NHL with 99 points - two points behind the Boston Bruins. The regular season success did not translate in the post season, however, as the Flames were stunned by the Los Angeles Kings in six games in the first round of the playoffs. The loss would begin a 15–year period of playoff frustration, as the Flames would not win another post season round until the 2003–04 season. 2005–06 Calgary Flames Season
The 2005–06 Calgary Flames season was the team's 26th season in the National Hockey League (NHL) in Calgary while the team celebrated its 25th season of play. During the off-season following the 2004–05 NHL lockout, Flames general manager Darryl Sutter announced that he would not re-sign free agent Martin Gelinas for the 2005–06 season. Instead, Sutter brought in three ageing veterans, Bryan Marchment, Tony Amonte and Darren McCarty, as free agent reclamation projects to start the season. Nonetheless, the season began with high expectations following Calgary's surprising run to the 2004 Stanley Cup Finals.
