2018 Tour Challenge
The 2018 Tour Challenge was held from November 6 to 11 at the Tournament Centre in Thunder Bay, Ontario. This was the third Grand Slam of the 2018–19 curling season. In the men's Tier 1 competition, Brad Jacobs defeated Brendan Bottcher in the final 6–5. Team Bottcher was playing in their first Grand Slam final. In Tier 2, Kirk Muyres defeated Scott McDonald's team in the final to secure a spot in the 2019 Canadian Open. The women's Tier 1 competition saw Rachel Homan defeat Tracy Fleury 8–4. In the Tier 2 final, Elena Stern beat Sayaka Yoshimura 6–5, qualifying for the 2019 Canadian Open. Qualification The Tour Challenge consists of two tiers of 15 teams. For Tier 1, the top 15 teams on the World Curling Tour's Order of Merit rankings as of October 1, 2018. 2017 GSOC Tour Challenge
The 2017 GSOC Tour Challenge was held from September 5 to 10 at the Co-operators Centre at Evraz Place in Regina, Saskatchewan. This was the first Grand Slam of the 2017–18 curling season. There were two tiers in each of the men's and women's events. The winning tier 1 teams get a direct bye into the 2018 Humpty's Champions Cup, the last grand slam event of the season. The winning tier 2 teams get a bye into the 2017 Masters, the next grand slam event of the season. On the men's side, the defending World Champion Brad Gushue rink from St. John's, Newfoundland defeated the defending Norwegian champion Steffen Walstad rink in the final. It would be Gushue's 8th career grand slam win. Team Gushue went undefeated in the tournament and took home $20,000 for the win. Kevin Koe
Kevin Koe ( ; born January 11, 1975) is a Canadian curler. Koe is a two-time World champion and four-time Canadian champion. He was the skip of the Canadian men's team at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang. Originally from Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, he now resides in Calgary, Alberta and curls out of The Glencoe Club. He learned to curl at the age of six in Inuvik, Northwest Territories. Career Junior career After several trips to the territorial junior men's curling championships, Koe finally won in 1994. This earned him the right to skip the Northwest Territories/Yukon team at the 1994 Canadian Junior Curling Championships. Niklas Edin
Johan Niklas Edin (born 6 July 1985) is a Swedish curler. He currently resides in Karlstad, which has been his curling home base since 2008. He holds several sport distinctions. He is the first and the only skip in World Curling Federation (WCF) history to win three Olympic medals – gold (2022), silver (2018), and bronze (2014) – and to skip men's curling teams to six World Men's Curling Championship medals (2013, 2015, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022). He is also a seven-time European Curling Championship titleholder (2009, 2012, 2014–2017, 2019) and also won three silver medals in those championships (2011, 2018, 2021). Brad Gushue
Bradley Raymond Gushue, ONL ( ; born June 16, 1980) is a Canadian curler from St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. Gushue, along with teammates Russ Howard, Mark Nichols, Jamie Korab and Mike Adam, represented Canada in curling at the 2006 Winter Olympics, where they won the gold medal by defeating Finland 10–4. He also represented Canada at the 2022 Winter Olympics, where he won a bronze medal. In addition to the Olympics, Gushue won the 2017 World Men's Curling Championship with teammates Mark Nichols, Brett Gallant, and Geoff Walker. World Curling Tour
The World Curling Tour (WCT) is a group of curling bonspiels featuring the best male, female, and mixed doubles curlers in the world. History The World Curling Tour was founded by former World Champion Ed Lukowich, with later assistance from John Kawaja. The World Curling Tour commenced in 1992, with men's events only at first. It replaced the "Canadian Curling Tour" held the previous season. The first season consisted of 48 events (with only one outside Canada), and was sponsored by Seagram's distillery. Teams earned points in every event with the top 30 qualifying for the season ending " V.O. Cup", today known as the Players' Championship. Its first president and CEO was Lukowich. Sayaka Yoshimura
is a Japanese curler from Sapporo, Hokkaido. She is the skip of the FORTIUS curling team, which won the Japan Curling Championships in both 2015 and 2021. At the international level, she has represented Japan twice at the World Women's Curling Championship (, ) and two Pacific-Asia Curling Championships in and , winning the gold medal in 2021. Career Yoshimura made her international debut for Japan at the 2006 Pacific Junior Curling Championships, playing lead for Team Japan, skipped by Megumi Kobayashi. Elena Stern
Elena Stern (born 8 November 1994) is a retired Swiss curler from Zürich. Career Stern first represented Switzerland on the international stage at the 2012 Winter Youth Olympics where her team of Michael Brunner, Romano Meier and Lisa Gisler won the gold medal. In 2014, she played in her first World Junior Curling Championship as the alternate for Corina Mani. They lost the tiebreaker 7–6 to Sweden's Isabella Wranå. She returned the following season at the 2015 World Junior Curling Championships, this time as lead for Lisa Gisler. Her Swiss team won the bronze medal. In 2015 she also played in her first European Curling Championship as alternate for Alina Pätz. She did not play in any games. 2019 Canadian Open (curling)
The 2019 Meridian Canadian Open was held from January 8 to 13 at the Civic Centre in North Battleford, Saskatchewan. This will be the fifth Grand Slam event and third "major" of the 2018–19 curling season. On the men’s side, Brendan Bottcher of Edmonton defeated John Epping of Toronto 6-3 in seven ends to win his first Grand Slam. On the women’s side, Rachel Homan of Ottawa edged Silvana Tirinzoni of Aarau 4-3 to win her tenth slam. With the win, Homan passed Jennifer Jones for most career Grand Slam wins, excluding defunct slams. It was also Homan's third straight slam win of the season. Scott McDonald (curler)
Scott McDonald (born May 8, 1986) is a Canadian curler from St. Thomas, Ontario. Career McDonald had a successful junior career which involved winning the 2002 provincial Bantam championship (playing lead for Andrew Nixon), the 2004 provincial school boy championship for London's St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Secondary School, and the 2007 provincial junior mixed championship. Following juniors, McDonald went on to play on the World Curling Tour, first for Kirk Ziola and then for Wayne Tuck, Jr. (playing second on both teams). In 2012, McDonald would form his own team as skip. McDonald won his first Tour event as a skip at the 2013 KW Fall Classic. He would win the event again in 2014. After playing three seasons for the Codey Maus rink, McDonald formed his own team again in 2018. Kirk Muyres
Kirk Lyle Muyres (born June 29, 1990) is a Canadian curler. He is a former Canadian junior champion. Career Juniors As a youth, Muyres was a member of the Saskatchewan team at the 2007 Canada Winter Games, where he played 5th. For much of his junior career, Muyres played third for the Josh Heidt rink. The team played in their first provincial men's championship in 2010 when Muyres was just 19. The team won one game in the event. After the season, Muyres left the team to play for the Braeden Moskowy rink at third. The team won the Saskatchewan Junior championships that year, earning the rink the right to represent Saskatchewan at the 2011 Canadian Junior Curling Championships.
